-
I pay off my credit card balances with my curve card. When I do this with Amex, I do so a day or so after my statement is issued. This then means my direct debit is automatically reduced to £0 as I’ve paid the statement off in full.
I paid off my statement balance for my virgin card a couple of days after my recent statement was issued. I’d not done this previously. I did this through the app my making a ‘one off payment’ through the payments link, I’m sure I opted to pay the ‘statement balance’. Since then I’ve noticed the app says my direct debit is still due to be taken, whereas I expected this to be £0. I’ve spoken to virgin who were a little clueless but said it was their terms that meant even if I make a payment they still take the full direct debit. In which case what’s the point of that money is only debited from my NEXT statement?
Today I can see in the ‘one off payment’ link the first option is now to ‘make requested payment’ which is my full balance and the option below is what I remember previously, pay ‘statement balance’. I’m sure the first option was just the minimum payment before.
Did I just go into make my payment a few days too early? Has anyone else who usually pays via direct debit made a one off debit card payment and therefore not had the full direct debit for the statement balance process as usual?
Virgin still takes the dd even if you’ve paid already – I adjusted mine to £100 so they just take that.
Different card companies have different policies on this. Some will still take the DD as normal, others will reduce the DD if you make payments to your account by a certain date. I can never remember which company does what.
You can switch your DD to minimum payment, and do the rest manually by card, but I find that is an excellent way to get in a muddle and forget…
I had this question and was also annoyed to find out they don’t adjust the DD like AMEX do.
I was told ( and have experienced) that if you pay the amount in full and don’t spend on the card, they don’t take the dd. However if there is any balance on the card, even from new spend, they take the full dd amount.

My understanding is slightly different, in that the maximum they will take is the total statement amount, but the minimum they will take is whatever the balance on the card is at the point the DD is processed. So whilst your payments won’t reduce your DD, if you have made additional payments then the DD won’t put your account in credit. So this is true that if you had paid off the full amount and hadn’t made any further spend, you wouldn’t have a DD come out. But if you paid the full amount manually and then subsequently did £500 of spend between the statement and the DD being processed they would take the £500.
I’ve had this card nearly 2 years now. Initially I set up a DD for the full statement amount but then noticed that they took that even though I’d made extra payments, and I did go into credit. Now that my DD is £100, I just make sure the balance is at least that when they come to take it. It doesn’t seem to adjust itself at all without intervention from me.
has anyone noticed on the app the option for a one off payment has disappeared?
I’ve uninstalled the app and reinstalled
still gone ?
how wierdI’ve uninstalled the app and reinstalled

how wierdThis sounds like it’s your account that is somewhat impacted, rather than the app. You should probably call customer service.
