Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Payment issues

    Hi all.

Got this card just last week for the SUB.

The first weird thing we noticed is that we can log into our Online Banking but to get the app to see Avios and all that stuff, I had to either have an activation code from a branch (wtf?) or a PIN Sentry security hardware device (wtf 2?).

So we had to pick the latter and now wait like 10 days for that to come to be able to log in.. firstly, is this normal? I don’t have to do anything like this to log into Santander, AMEX, you name it..

Another issue – we got a 14K limit but trying to pay rates / council tax for £1400 and keeps getting rejected. Barclays did not see the issue or the transaction so will have to get in touch with the council. Anyone had any issues like this?

If you have a pin sentry kep pad from another bank or provider then try that. A lot of them work.

I don’t, no. Interestingly the CS team said I don’t need one and explained the steps. I told him that I had a secret step that prevents me from completing registration until I have that or get a code from branch (can’t, they don’t have any in NI AFAIK) which took him as a surprise..

Waiting on this and see if anything changes. Weird for it to be a simple Mastercard and not work. Their team has been less than helpful, definitely not AMEX standard.

I just got this card too. Luckily, we have card devices from other banks, so no issue registering and logging in, but it would be helpful to ask about this on application.

As for payment, I can’t get normal online payments to work either. At the stage where I think I should get a text to verify the payment, it just fails. Amazon is the only online retailer where the payment goes through.

After a few days, I was finally able to activate the card for Apple Pay though and online payments through Apple Pay do work.

I had something very similar when I first got the card. Helpfully, I can’t remember how it was resolved, but within a week or two it was fine. I remember I could pay council tax over the phone, but it didn’t work online.

Amazon did work. I got this card to make 2 x £1500 purchases so if one does not work for whatever reason (accepts Mastercard – both of them) then I’m a bit screwed. So yeah, let’s see how it goes once I can get the app to work, maybe not having the app is causing issues so fingers crossed.

That’s my next step to speak to the council / N Ireland rates people to see what’s up. Barclays said they did not see anything failing or anything reaching them so could be on their end, but we paid it with a Mastercard CC (different one) without issues last year.

This will almost certainly be on the Barclaycard end and not with the council. Have you made a chip and pin purchase on the card, as I think this is a critical part of getting the card to start working.

There’s not that much happening on the app and don’t think this will be the issue. My wife, who got the card last year when they had the first 50,000-Avios offer, has never used the app.

We’ve not yet used it in a machine, no. I used it with an Amazon purchase – worked. Council £1400 payment – fails and no record of it with the Barclays team. So it’s a bit strange..

Barclaycard CS are fairly worthless. I would do an in-store chip and pin purchase and hopefully that should get things moving. I think that’s what my wife had to do and what I’ve done. Everyday since the initial chip and pin purchase, more features seem to become available for me (e.g., Apple Pay, Avios show in app, etc.), although I still can only buy online from Amazon unless I do Apple Pay.

I get you. Will try that then. Bit mad that I have none of this faff with AMEX or even Santander. It’s probably going to be just a dip and ditch card for the SUB if I can get it to work lol. Will try to report back and try to get the chip to go tomorrow then see how it goes.

Barclays actually have six branches in NI – there are branches in Belfast (High St), Lisburn, Bangor, Portadown, Newry and Coleraine.

Lisburn and Portadown were on the recent list of closures announced but are still open AFAIK.

This probably looks very much like a problem we had at the beginning. It boils down to that the TFA verification fails on Barclays’ side fails. This probably will only be resolved when your app is properly set up. You’ll need the device to do that and much luck that it will then work as the TFA is then trying to use the app for it.

However, don’t hold your hopes to high as it is likely that your account has not been created properly and it may take weeks or even months to fix it (CS cannot help and you’ll need to wait for it).

Amazon works because it is somehow not using TFA. Same with Apple Pay.

That sounds a bit mad.. the offer runs for 3 months so it taking all this time is a bit worrying. I was going to do the spend in May as that’s when they need done. If not then my partner signed up for a useless card for nothing. Here’s hoping we get some luck or support if push comes to shove.

As an update. Got the device today. Used it to verify whatever they wanted and logged into the app.

Once done that, tried the payment again and they sent a simple text message with a code. Bit idiotic that it could not do that before – it was not even verified using the app OR the device.

Anyway – once the 50K gets posted this card will be cancelled. Thanks for your inputs.

I don’t think it will be the app alone that will have solved your problems (e.g., I had registered and verified on app last week and was having similar problems to you until just recently), but glad to hear that everything is now working.

Well, I think in this instance it was that as even before it kept failing super quick. Maybe it needed the app registration and verification with this device to then allow for a text / MFA to be sent out. That seemed to have been the bottleneck. I am glad it did, as the people on chat were clueless.
