Forums Payment cards American Express Platinum sign up bonus referral fine if holding non-MR cards?

  • 74 posts

I just signed up for the Platinum with an invite link from my wife. I have only had a BAPP and Nectar card in the past 24 months.

Checking into the eligibility for the 75K+25K offer when referred lead me to find posts from people saying you need to have held no personal Amex cards at all if being referred.

I just had a chat with Amex support via the App and explicitly asked this and highlighted the wording issue in the terms and they said that I am eligible, even with the referral link, because I have held no MR earning cards in the past.

So, do I believe them and wait 6 months (which is how long that £10K spend will take) to see? Or do I cancel the card to get the pro rata refund and have my wife apply without a referral link since she will be eligible via that route?

Read the terms on the referral (there’s a pop up box from the i in a circle) and screenshot the whole process. Don’t rely on what any Amex agent says, but you can ultimately rely upon what they formally put in writing (so not chat agents).

Thanks, sounds like your advice is to cancel and have my wife apply directly?

The one thing I would say is that I don’t feel I can rely on what they formally put in writing since, as far as I can find, they don’t define what is classed as “personal American Express Cards”. Hence the confusion in some forum posts.

So my interpretation was any card that wasn’t co-branded, hence going ahead with the application – if I hadn’t decided to Google and look in the forums I wouldn’t have questioned it (I guess something in my subconscious questioned it otherwise I wouldn’t have Googled around).

I had no idea there were different bonus terms for Plat referrals, so I’ve clearly overlooked that in my recent strategies.
All I can contribute is anecdotal evidence. My partner referred me to Plat under the current offer and I received the 75k bonus fine once the spend threshold was hit, despite holding more than 1 non-MR Amex card…

Did you not get 80k for using a referral?

Ah yes of course, I did indeed. Well pointed out.

That’s good to know because I referred someone that has a BAPP, and was slightly worried about that term. But, I think its a bad copy/paste job from the Gold terms tbh. Incidentally, I got my referral bonus.

Thanks Nath4n, I think this is a bad copy paste job on that terms page as, with further rereading I just found this toward the bottom of the main referral card page for the platinum:

“I understand I will not be eligible for any Welcome Bonus award if I hold or have held any personal Membership Rewards enrolled American Express Cards in the past 24 months.

You must apply via the button on this page to ensure you and your friend both receive your bonus.”
