Forums Payment cards American Express Platinum Travel: cruise cancellation

Hi folks. Sorry if this is off-topic but I think this community may have the most experience to be able to help. I have called Amex, but the insurance team can only help Mon-Fri and I’m trying to understand options ASAP.

I’ve a holiday booked flying on Friday and cruising for a week embarking Saturday. I learned this weekend that my Dad has been diagnosed with cancer. We don’t know what the full prognosis is until Tuesday.

I’m trying to work out what cover I have for cancellation; is this situation covered? Parents are keen for us to go anyway… if we do and something happens while we’re away, what sort of cover is available?

Any context or information would be really helpful. I’m a bit of a stress ball right now with worry etc. and any info I can get would be really helpful. Thanks!

Before calling AMEX you need to check the airline and cruise line policies re cancellation in situations like yours whether it’s a rebooking to a later date or outright cancellation.

AMEX is going to expect you to do that anyway.

Some airlines are pretty good in allowing rebooking to a later date but not on fully refunding for example.

Firstly I hope you and your family OK! It must be a big shock. Wishing the best for your dad.

You need to read your docs. My speculation will be you can claim any non recoverable costs back in this scenario. What you won’t be able to do is to claim back any return home half way, it is now a known event.

But as @BA Flyer IHG Stayer says you should also speak to the travel providers, you may find them helpful in this situation and allow you to put your trip on hold without needing to involve the insurer
