I had bought a TV from John Lewis which I then cancelled (bought another one elsewhere). Once the money returned to my account I fell below my £12k spend amount to trigger welcome bonus, and the welcome bonus points of 80k were rescinded. I had earlier transfered these out of Amex and into BA. I am now at minus 80k points. And in order to make it whole, I would need to spend £80k. If I am to spend £80k, I would rather do it elsewhere to earn points, rather than get my balance back up to zero. I did actually want to keep the card for 13 months to get the next 40k points. But it seems as the best choice is to cancel the card with a points balance. Am I right? And if I do cancel with a minus points balance, does this have any impact down the line should I apply for this product again (or indeed another amex product)? Thank you.
This is frequently asked here – it’s very fortunate that you transferred the MR points out before the refund cleared.
There’s nothing to stop you cancelling the card but no one really knows how Amex is going to view future applications.
Wasn’t there 6 months to spend the £12k? Has the 6 months actually passed?
If you get back up to £12k you’ll get the 80k welcome bonus back.
I’m confused with the TV situation why couldn’t JL supply a replacement or vouchers for you to buy a replacement from them after so long? Assuming you didn’t leave it until the last day to buy the TV then cancel and buy it elsewhere with another card weeks later.
As above you can cancel with no issue but Amex will decide what they do next time with the info that have.
I bought the TV a few days before the end of 3 months to spend the £12k. And then cancelled. I’d much rather a refund than voucher. I had a need for the points so transfered them out. In a way I’m glad as at least I got the 80k points.
So it really is spend £80k to get back to zero points. Or cancel. We’ll see what they say should I reapply. Thanks for advise.
Better ways to manufacture spending than buying a TV…
Anyway, what done is done, just cancel the card.
Not sure why you posted on here to check after doing as it sounds like you knew exactly what you were doing so just have to live with the consequences if there are any.
I recently took out the Platinum card via a 60k welcome bonus link, before I applied for the card out I called Amex to make sure I was entitled to the bonus and I was told that I was entitled to the bonus after spending 6k. When I spent the £6k the 60k points bonus never arrived so I contacted Amex via the chat to be told I wasn’t eligible for the bonus as I had not been 2 years without a MR card. I have challenged the decision and asked them to go and listen to the call as I made a note of the date and time of the call.
I am so angry about this as I made sure I was entitled to the bonus before applying.
What are my chances of getting the bonus? 100% I was told on that phone call that I was entitled to the bonus!
@gordog01 – this question comes up fairly regularly. The bottom line is that whatever an agent told you can’t override the two year rule. The misinformation becomes a matter of bad customer service that might attract a small amount of compensation.
The general advice here is that one shouldn’t rely on what Amex agents say. It’s better to rely on one’s own records. It’s a shame that Amex UK doesn’t use its US system that confirms SUB eligibility (or not) at the point of application.
You should challenge the failure to award the SUB and that Amex is estopped from denying the award as you relied upon the representation of an authorised agent to your detriment. I’m afraid the hit rate at the FOS on this topic isn’t that good.
