An Australian couple had to sit beside beside the body of a deceased passenger for part of their journey MEL-DOH

They should have been moved as aparently there were free seats. I couldn’t have sat there.

I don’t know.. at least they would have been quiet and well mannered!

The story is slightly confusing. Was the deceased originally sitting next to them?

Maybe the complaint is that he was asked to move from an aisle to a dreaded middle seat?

Odd that they weren’t moved if there were free seats…

In the early 2000s I was on a pretty full KL flight from LIM to AMS. A capsule of cocaine burst in a guy’s stomach, there was nothing that could be done for him and he died right in front of me in the bulkhead. They’d moved the three people in that row, but the body was left there until we landed in AMS. It was gone within a couple of minutes of the doors opening…

If there were empty seats it seems odd they wouldn’t have been moved.

In the early 2000s I was on a KL flight from LIM to AMS where a guy died after a (likely) condom full of coke exploded in hi tummy.

I don’t understand why they expected ‘to be moved’. If there were spare seats, they have legs, they can move themselves!

Can’t leave anything lying around in Amsterdam.

If they were in economy and the dead lady was so heavy that they couldn’t move her to business class, I don’t think this couple could exactly move. Corpse jumping probably not in their bingo card for the flight.

Oh come on! The lady moved. The man “was not given the option to do so”.

Yes this is truly horrendous but I can’t imagine having to move a dead body about. If I did, I doubt I would necessarily be thinking straight.

The cabin crew are people and unlike, say, a mortician are probably not used to dealing with corpses. They probably went home and cried.

    “Please can I move seats?”
“No – you must stay next to the corpse”
    BAD

“Why didn’t the cabin crew suggest I move to one of the vacant seats?”
    SOMEONE WANTS COMPENSATION

Which of the above is the more accurate version of events?

    Maybe maybe.
But I think some people are scared of speaking up or causing offence or confrontations etc

Like Mrs Aston. If she gets served a bad drink, she will just drink it and won’t say a word in case she causes offence / is scared of the reaction.
Whereas I don’t give a monkeys – if I paid for something I’m damn well going to get what I paid for.

So, could it be the couple were too scared or possibly worried about being seen as being insensitive by asking to move? (Maybe the dead persons relatives were nearby?).

(Maybe the dead persons relatives were nearby?).

If so, perhaps the relatives should have sat next to the body.

Why would they need to ‘ask’ to move? I’ve been on plenty of flights where I have moved after takeoff. You don’t need permission!

Okay, I possibly get that if they are mobility impaired as well, but in that situation what are the cabin crew supposed to do? Disassemble the seats in front so they can get out?

The crew should have told them to move before putting the corpse in that seat.
But like someone else said here, it’s not like the crew was in an easy situation and could have thought of everything on the fly.

Having seen the couple interviewed I don’t think they have flown too many times and certainly aren’t members of any frequent flier forums. The woman was described as a nervous flier.

Someone else mentioned on here I think that a man died of heart attack mid flight and he was left on economy seat with a blanket for cover.

R.i.p and all but I couldn’t see myself going for a nap, enjoying a meal, laying back watching a movie. Id just stare into space and would just count the seconds until doors open.

This. People are apparently scared to ask or move but call the press and announce publicly right after disembarking?

Did the lady not have a thought of asking her hubby to move? Was he expecting a formal invitation and a red carpet to be rolled out?

Nah. He was expected to man up and sit by the body while his wife, being naturally more delicate, was proactively moved

There is more on this on the BBC this morning – Qatar stating the crew handled the situation properly. I suspect they probably did, something about the original story did not feel right to me. It is not all that unusual for people to die on a flight but this is the first time I heard anybody make a song and dance about it in the media. The only surprise to me was that there weren’t a score of other pax making videos to post on their social media.

Should this be in a new “infrequent flyer” thread since the deceased won’t be, err, flying anymore 🙂

We had someone die last year in the car park of my very small business.

He was first noticed by a young student arriving for a lesson, who said he looked very unwell. We went to check up, and she came along. We called 999, but within minutes – before they arrived – he was dead.

Our student was, obviously, in no fit state to have her lesson. To be frank, the instructor was not either.

Of course, we didn’t impose any cancellation fee! We also said: Thanks. And we added, we know you have had a wasted journey, don’t worry, we’ll make it up to you. Learning to fly is expensive.

And for the family? Anything we can do. If you ever want to come back for a minute or two’s reflection – please come. You’ll be very welcome.

Perhaps that’s what Qatar did/should have done? A personal letter of thanks a few days later from the Captain, a bunch of flowers. Perhaps even an offer of a space available PE upgrade/lounge access etc next time.

We did what we could “on the fly”. An airline the size of Qatar should have policies in place.

I am almost certain the deceased did fly again.

    @Colin
,I am sure Qatar Airways would be only to happy to offer one of those to everybody on the plane 🙂
