Can someone who has done it let me know what the transit at Doha entails? Will be flying BHX-DOH in J and transiting to DOH-BKK in F with a 1h45m gap (same ticket, QR). Will there be enough time to sample the Al Safwa lounge? It sounds too tight to me, but I read that the min transfer time at the airport was only 45min?

If I made it to the lounge, do they pluck you out when your flight is ready?

Don’t want any stress so happy to forego the lounge, but if there’s a chance to see it,
    I would love to! Thanks!

I did this exact journey last week. We landed at DOH, off the plane and straight into the departures lounge for the flight to BKK. I had the same stopover time and visited the lounge for 30 mins. Would have been longer but wanted to check the airport out as it was my first time there. Incredibly efficient.

On the way back however was a bit more stressful. Layover was 55 mins. We landed and there was a man with a sign saying those connecting, come with me. We had to do hand luggage security again(!) and then we were escorted at some pace through the airport to the next gate. Only time for a quick 3 min toilet break.

Thanks, sounds like I might get to see it then!

Hand luggage security at DOH can be a real drag on your connection time during the midnight-2am peak. Even with a segregated J/F line it still takes enough time to materially eat into your connection experience.

Can I ask… why is that from LHR there is no transit security, before transferring to another flight, but from e.g. AUK back to LHR there is…?

Maybe I just haven’t spotted the pattern but it seems a bit random to me. Arriving from Africa, always put through transit security – arriving from anywhere else sometimes yes sometimes no.

I’ve got the opposite, we’ve got a 9 hour layover at Doha! I know I’m not eligible for a transit hotel, as we’re travelling on Avios (business class, so at least we get access to the lovely sounding lounge!).

Any recommendations for how to pass the time?

We’ve just come back from Auckland with a lengthy layover in Doha between flights both ways, which were Avios too – we found the Al Mourjan lounge at the Northern end (garden end) of the airport the most comfortable, and we used the ‘quiet rooms’ attached to the lounge for a bit of extra sleep, although the day beds in those rooms aren’t as comfortable as I’d hoped – maybe I’m just not the best shape/size for them! You’ll also have access to Al Mourjan South, and the Platinum or Gold lounges if you have OW status, so you can do a bit of lounge surfing to break up the time.

Thank you. No status, so limited to the Al Mourjan lounges. My biggest concern is food in the lounges. I have to be gluten free for medical reasons, and I’m also vegetarian. Flights are a bit of a nightmare, as the GF meals are always meat or fish, but I take plenty of food from home. However, for the flight out, we’re staying in a hotel the night before, then have the flight to Doha (flying from Birmingham), a 9 hour layover at Doha, then a 17 hour flight to Doha. Going to be tricky for me to take enough “fresh” food to do me for all that time, so was hoping I’d have some options in the lounges, but really have no idea.

Will definitely try and make use of the quiet rooms for a while, and also hope to be able to grab a shower to freshen up as well.

We tried the lounge food from both the breakfast menu and the lunch/dinner menu. They do have vegetarian and vegan options, and they have a la carte as well as buffet, so you could potentially ask for one of the alacarte items without or with certain ingredients. Tee menu I found online seems up to date ie matches with what we were offered last week – hopefully there’s something you can work with https://www.qatarairways.com/content/dam/hia/pdf/al-mourjan-dinning-en.pdf

That’s so helpful, thank you very much.
