Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Quick way to build points

  • 32 posts

    Hi all,
I’m trying to get Avios points. I had a AMAX plat from Nov22 cancelled in March 23. So scored some SUB there.
I currently have the BAPP card since April and used the 2-1 already last year.
I’m also a current HSBC premier account a holder but not got the creditcard.
    So options?
I don’t anticipate using the 2-1 BAPP for a while as I want to spend the next 18-24 months maximising points.
I’m about to switch from Tesco to sainsbury for Nector points and stop using my Tesco Mastercard so looking to replace that.
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks all.

Make sure you use the nectar app. You get weekly Sainsbury’s offers in there and those can really boost your points earnings. It does learn from your shopping so the offers I see are generally stuff I buy anyway or similar.

    Avios earning Barclaycard.
Normal online shopping via the BA shopping portal.

HSBC premier credit card the one with a fee. The IT is not good but if you are after points there is a bonus i think

If you want to build up quick then you’d have to get into mindset to pay all. BAPP where accepted and Barclays where amex is not. The shouldn’t be a single not being utilised.

Use the BA Rewards app and keep an eye on the offers. Some restaurants offer 10 avios per pound – you need to link a credit card to trigger it – but a great bonus.

And prepay all your bills by either card, don’t waste a chance to earn points by using direct debits. Absolutely insist on card payment where possible instead of bacs. PayPal is a great alternative if Amex not accepted on line, with your Amex linked of course.

    Good tips thanks,

Debating whether to give up the BAPP Amex or at least downgrade to save the fee in favour or the HSBC card.

I’m hoping barclaycard does a promo soon.

Don’t really want to pay £250 for the BAPP/ £190 for the hsbc and £250 for the barclaycard at the same time.

Before you give up the BAPP card ask them for a retention bonus, it’s usually 10k with £3k spend.

I could try that but guess I would have to pay £250 for another year? £250 for 10k doesn’t sound like a great offer?

Using the BA 3x monthly bonus I’ve been offered 8700 for £80 which sounds ok?

Depends on how quick you can spend £3k and if you want to keep the card or get a pro rata refund.

The hsbc card isn’t worth it just for the points. The annual fee just about covers the points you get, so no win no loss.

If you’re prepared to pay for Avios then consider a subscription or Avios boost. Both have had recent articles on them.

Barclays basic is just as good as the plus for me. You can also look at PayPoint and Monzo. Search the forums “how to get more Avios” for a lot of historical info.

    Ok thanks again for tips,

    My plan for now is

1/ switch from Tesco to sainsbury and collect nector
2/ try and get 10k retention for bapp and then downgrade after points awarded
3/ wait a while to get barclaycard and hopefully an offer comes up with increased signup bonus
4/ take advantage of 3x boost every month
5/ get Amex platinum agin when 2 years is up (March 25.)

That should get me to around 300k in 18 months time.
