Forums Hotel loyalty schemes Radisson Rewards Radisson reviews following my VIP status upgrade

  • 14 posts

Just back from the Radisson RED Vienna.

Booked two single rooms (on the same booking) for one night. We were given a standard city view (+2 categories) and a junior suite (+5 categories). That might seem like an odd pairing, but they were both on the top floor and just across the corridor from each other.

Welcome gift (in each room!) was a voucher for two free drinks from the bar, and a plate of macarons.

I am reading this thread with astonishment. I did 5 nights at Radisson St Helier and got placed in the room I had booked.

VIP now, but Premium during last stay and got free drinks vouchers from the bar plus a better view room and that was the case all times I went.

Great one for @GuernseyGlobetrotter as well, walking distance from the port for the Guernsey Ferry, then short walk to the direct bus to the airport.

We convert our 241 vouchers into flights from JSY rather than take the risk of relying on Aurigny. Departing from JSY doesnt cost more albeit the tax benefit is gone now too unfortunately.

Upgraded? Yes, from standard room to Executive, high floor
    Breakfast: Yes

Water in room, handwritten card. Was offered a drinks voucher and late checkout.

Room was looking tired but it did the job for an overnight stay.

I’ve got a few Radisson stays coming up in April/May. Any VIP experiences with the below?:

    – Radisson Hotel & Conference Centre OR Tambo Airport
    – Radisson RED Helsinki

Contacted the OR Tambo one about early check-in (didn’t ask for a specific time). I know it’s not a given and VIP status doesn’t mean they need to give me particularly special treatment etc etc – the response I got was basically, our check-in time is 3pm, your flight arrives at 7am, not our problem.

Thanks for the shout out @dan_a_man ! Off topic but I agree regarding the benefits of the free ex-Jersey connecting flights to LHR, although we have found that the Blue Islands hop to that island can be almost as unreliable as the Aurigny to LGW! At least it cuts out the LGW-LHR car or bus transfer though.

Shame BA always want us to have our credentials checked in Jersey though as if one could stay airside there it would make it easier to connect to the BA morning departures from Blue Island’s first flight. I guess that’s why you overnight at the Radisson Blu St Helier and then bus it to the airport? That’s probably cheaper and more pleasant than our default option of LHR Sofitel so I’ll consider it in future, especially given the VIP perks. Thanks for the tip!

Upgraded? Yes, from Superior Room to Executive Studio King on top floor
Lounge Access: No – not clear what’s going on here, there are signs for the Exec Lounge on 12th floor (and roof terrace) but neither seemed to be in use and weren’t highlighted by receptionist.
Breakfast: Yes, though this was poorest part of the stay, food fine, but packed windowless room with muzak and queues to be seated even at what they say are quiet times (0730). Didn’t bother with it every day.
Welcome gift: Nothing related to status, got a bottle of wine for skipping housekeeping, which in retrospect I regretted for a 3 night stay – 2 is okay, 3 is one too many.
    Stay Duration: 3 nights

Apparently the executive lounge is closed for a “private event” and they are “uncertain about the next opening”.
Not sure exactly how this can be unless it is an open ended contracting for a “private event”.

Upgraded? Nope. Paid for something called a ‘superior individual room’ and that’s exactly what I got, a *very* compact double.
Lounge Access: No – receptionist was very perfunctory, didn’t draw attention to facilities, I didn’t realise there was a fitness suite until checkout.
Breakfast: Yes, food was fine. Staff a bit annoying, seemed like a bit of an effort to have to deal with customers, one snatched cutlery off the place setting opposite me to use on another table without a word.
Welcome gift: Nothing except a 500ml bottle of water.
    Stay Duration: 1 night.

This is a dreadful hotel – loads of road noise, paper thin walls between rooms and bathrooms well past their best. Everything was been covered in numerous coats of white emulsion. Bad move to put these old Edwardian hotels under the Blu brand, really doesn’t meet expectations.

Almost finished with my week in Georgia. Radisson have some nice options here.

    Name: Radisson Red

Upgraded? Yes, from standard room to premium room.
    Breakfast: Yes
    Welcome gift: None

Notes : It was an early arrival at 07am, I’d emailed the hotel in advance and they said I could pay £25 to check in early. They allocated me a ground floor premium room but apologised as it wasn’t the best room in the hotel but I could change it the day after when more availability opened up. We were happy with it so didn’t move and the early check in charge never appeared. The hotel has been beautifully renovated and has kept some of the original features.

Upgraded? Yes, from standard room to a magnificent spa suite on the 11th floor
    Breakfast: Yes
    Welcome gift: Chocolates/Nuts/Fruit platter

Lovely views of Batumi and the Black Sea – hotel could do with a soft furnishings refresh but we have enjoyed our stay.

Just stayed at the Radisson Blu Dublin Airport. Overall a clean and comfortable 4 stay property, and very convenient for terminal 2.

Upgraded? No, booked a High Floor Premium Room and received it. Request for airport view not honoured, so I enjoyed a fetching car park vista instead…
    Breakfast: Yes
Welcome gift: Small box of chocolates and a note.

No acknowledgment of status at check in, no offer of upgrade paid or otherwise (though 3 suites showing as bookable). Check in was perfunctory at best, though I wasn’t expecting more. It’s an interesting one with so many of us having done status matches; one thought is that it weakens the offering and you don’t get perks you haven’t earned, but then the company is the one giving their status away – I would be more inclined to treat newly minted status guests particularly well, in the hopes they will see the value and be incentivised to pay and retain that status. While this stay was fine I will not be rushing back, free breakfast or no, but it’s nice to see other properties are doing better.

Was going to give this a try for my next trip to Ireland as opposed to travelling via Dublin City and stopping off at the HGI so it’s a shame to hear that you didn’t get anything beyond breakfast.

Hi all, I’m new to this forum but use Radisson’s a lot so I thought I would chip in. Currently a VIP member, obtained through nights stay and not status matching.

Notes: STAY AWAY! Even without being a rewards member this was a shockingly bad experience. Phoned VIP line the day before to request early check in as I couldn’t get through to the hotel. Was told a 1pm check in was fine. Arrived just after 1pm to be told that they were no aware and there are no rooms yet. I waited for an hour when they called me and said a room is ready for me. I asked if there was an upgrade available but was told “no, you’re lucky to even have a room right now” I was speechless at the rudeness but tired so I just took the room key and went up to the room. I walked in to find the room was facing a wall with almost no light coming in. I didn’t really care as I was catching a 6am flight the next day but for some, this would have been frustrating. I found TOENAIL CLIPPINGS on the floor and on the bed. I went back downstairs and was told that if I wanted another room I had to wait a few hours. I asked for housekeeping but was told that they are “busy” I just sighed and went back upstairs.. to find the room key stopped working. I went back down and they did something with the card. Went back up to the room but it still didn’t work. I had enough by this point and went back downstairs, told them I wanted to check out and someone to come up and get me in the room to get my stuff. The lady got argumentative but eventually agreed. Went to the Red Radisson 10 mins down the road after this.

    Breakfast: Yes
Welcome gift: None (walk in booking)
    Rating: 10/10
Notes: I explained the above to the reception staff when I walked in and a manager apologized for what happened. I was told that they are fully booked but as I was a VIP member and due to the poor experience at Blu, they will let me buy a standard room and they will upgrade it to a one bed suite or I can have an executive room with lounge access. I opted for the executive room. The room was great, and the view was perfect as well. After being in the room for 30 mins, there was a note slid under the door, handwritten with their thanks and once again apologizing for what happened at Blu. Honestly, I cant fault it and I would say anyone staying at Heathrow to choose Red over Blu.

Upgraded? Yes, from standard room to suite (best tier)
    Breakfast: Yes
Welcome gift: Box of peanuts and honey
    Rating: 8/10
Notes: The check in was a little slow, everyone was using the rewards line. The staff were very friendly. I wasn’t told I was upgraded to a suite but I was so very happy. The room felt a little bit dated but was very spacious. The breakfast was very good, better than UK Radissons for sure. When we checked out, there were unexplained charges that nobody could figure out why or what they were for so they were voided but otherwise a very good experience and I would stay again.

    Name: Radisson Blu

Upgraded? Yes, from standard room to premium room (2 tiers above)
    Breakfast: Yes
Welcome gift: pack of 3 Ferrero Rocher’s
    Rating: 6/10
Notes: This was a points run to get the bonus points on offer and therefor was one of the cheapest ones I could find which my review reflects. VIP status was recognized at check in at room was upgraded. Was on the 6th floor. It was a very good location, close to the bullring shopping centre and new street station. There were ear plugs given as it was a poor location for noise. I personally didn’t use them as I didn’t think the noise was any louder than most city centre hotels. The amenities were stocked up nicely and the room was very spacious and the view was good. The breakfast was poor, the sausages tasted like rubber and were of poor quality, the eggs were very overdone and the bacon was not cooked enough.

Overall, its a very mixed bag. I think that the UK Radissons are hit and miss with respecting your status whereas outside of the UK, they do generally recognize status and you do get the most out of your status. It is still better than Hilton in my opinion where I have never had my status respected with the exception of a free water bottle.

Room Booked? Standard room without breakfast – £120 a night in April, 15m^2
Upgraded? Deluxe Family room on 18th floor, 20m^2 with large sofa, coffee table, a proper desk – probably £220 a night in April
    Lounge Access? No lounge
    Welcome gift? None
Breakfast? Excellent quality, enormous space, excellent range of hot and cold food, breads and cold cuts, though no omelette or eggs benedict menu
Value for money? To save £600 or so for 6 nights on the Deluxe room, and another £200 to get free breakfast, this VIP status is really worthwhile

Has anyone ever queried their upgrade?

I am new to the whole VIP status thing, (it came with the Avolta status match)and am booked in the Park Plasa London Riverbank this evening for one night, I booked a standard double room and looking at booking I seem to have been ‘upgraded’ to a studio room with sofa bed, I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but I have no interest in having a sofa bed in the room, I done have kids and this is supposed to be a romantic night away with the wife. I would rather have a view than a sofa bed.

We will be arriving late due to my wife’s job, is it feasible to ask them to move us somewhere else? Or is it fixed? I did look at the hotel on the Radisson site and it is showing availability at all levels

You should have contacted them a week ago or earlier in the week and negotiated that in advance. Have you checked if better rooms are available. It is supposed to be best available room at check-in.

    67 posts

@alamode you could try an ask upon check in. Although they may say we have upgraded you so have fulfilled their obligation under the scheme rules.

I doubt if it is just to people travelling the sofa bed would be all setup, so it will just be a regular sofa in the room.

I would be highly surprised if they do anything, seen as though you wet from a standard double room to a studio room.

    Let us know the outcome.

A shout out to Bristol Radisson Blu Hotel.

Stayed here three times now for a weekend away, and every time I’ve been upgraded to a suite on the top Floor of the hotel, after booking the lowest room category. Great central location, and you can pre-book car parking underneath the hotel.

The suites leave a bit to be desired – not only are they a little tired, but the layout is very weird, with the “living” area up a small flight of stairs. In reality, you’d never use it. The selling point is the large south facing balcony area which is nice to sit out when the weather is with you.

Overall recommended for a very well priced weekend away in a cool city with plenty to do.

Is there any mileage in calling the hotel in advance to secure an upgrade, or are they very much done on the fly when you arrive? Staying at Park Plaza Riverbank soon and hoping for a similar result.

We had 2 great nights at the Radisson Blu in Jersey. From the outset the staff could not have been more welcoming. On arrival our VIP status was ackowledged and we were informed of our upgraded room. On departure we requested an late check out and this was granted without question. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

Upgraded? Two rooms booked – one Premium room which was upgraded to a Junior Suite and had the Panaramic Suite booked which we have always been happy with and stayed in several times. VIP status welcome. Had two bottle of wines in the room, multiple drinks vouchers etc.
Lounge Access: There isn’t a lounge but would be great if it did on the top floor. Views would be amazing!

    Overall rating for price: 10/10
Comments: Staying for both my Wife’s 40th tomorrow and my youngests birthday later in the week. Fully recognised that and done lots of things for them. Nice touches. I booked this ages ago and asked for the usual suite that we have had on previous stays which is on the 4th floor. Slightly disappointed that we were put harbour side and on the 3rd floor. Still a lovely suite (still Panaramic Suite) but not sure how or why they can’t accommodate such a request 7 months in advance. Emailed several times in the run up to the stay. Just told “sorry the 4th floor suite is occupied until Monday”
That aside, all good though 🙂

    Park Inn Berlin Alexanderplatz.

It’s a slightly dated hotel but well run, clean and the location is spot on.

Upgraded to an Upper level superior room , some boutique nuts, and a free drink voucher as a gift.

The best thing was the incredible view.

Surpassed my expectations and would return.
