I am planning to get a BA business class flight on a very high-demand route using the Barclaycard upgrade voucher.
The flight is over a year away, so I want to wait until 355 days before the return flight date to fully get the flight. This means that I have to keep my Barclaycard active until that date.
I want to reset my 25k/50k Avios bonus quickly, so I also want to cancel my Barclaycard as soon as possible. My plan for doing both things was the following:
1. Buy an Avios flight now on the same route on a random date using the Barclaycard upgrade voucher.
2. Cancel my Barclaycard.
3. 355 days before my planned flight, I change the dates of my flight to my intended date.Is this plan foolproof, or is there some detail that I’m missing?
You don’t need an active Barclaycard to keep or use the upgrade voucher. You can’t earn a second Barclaycard Avios SUB for two years after cancelling the current card.
Are you sure it’s 2 years? Other articles in this site say that I can get the Barclaycard bonus points as long as I didn’t have any Barclays credit card for the last 6 months.

Yes, I’m sure and nowhere on this site has what you say been stated in an article. If you are going to try and play the SUB game, you really need to be on top of all the terms!
“3.2 We’ll only apply one Avios Welcome Bonus in relation to your card to your BAEC account during the lifetime of your card account. If you close your card account after you receive your Avios Welcome Bonus and then open another Barclaycard Avios card account within 2 years after you closed the original account, you will not be eligible for another Avios Welcome Bonus.”
After you close a Barclaycard account, you can apply for another one after six months, but you aren’t eligible for an Avios card SUB for two years.
As I understand it:
Two years between cancelling a Barclays Avios MC and being eligible for a sign up bonus from another Barclays Avios MC.
Six months between cancelling an alternative (existing) non-Avios Barclaycard and being eligible for sign up bonus for a first time Barclays Avios MC application.
