Looking to book a redemption flight, two passengers in total.
There’s a chance one of the passengers might need to be cancelled later (but the other is almost certainty going).
Is it better to book both passengers together on the same booking reference, or separate? Is there a difference in the cancellation charges or policies?
I’m aware the risk of having them on separate booking references is that if they both fly… one might be “bumped” while the other doesn’t and they won’t get to the destination together / at the same time…
What would you do in this situation? Anything to consider to help me make a decision?
Personally unless I was wanting to share status I’d book them seperately to avoid having to call in for the cancellation. The risk of being bumped and then rerouted seperately is very small
Depending on route / cash paid you may get the cancellation cheaper if you do it online due to a current bug – by phone will be £35

I almost wrote the same thing, but OP has posted this on the Virgin sub.
So to answer your question OP, I guess it would help if you say how far in advance you are looking to book, and which cabin? And when the tentative passenger is likely to know for certain? But, having said all that, I think booking seperately is still probably the most sensible.
Looking to book for next August, in Economy.
Tentative passenger – probably will know about 1-2 months from the flight date, whether certain or cancel?
And no status at all with Virgin.
AFAIK, the Virgin change/cancellation fee is £30pp.
I think it would be unlikely that one of them would be bumped in economy tbh, so I would recommend booking separately for the certainty.
If you booked together, and one cancelled, I think its likely that you would have to cancel the whole booking and re-book, hoping that the seats go back into inventory, or if not, there is still availability. Not sure if they can split the booking and cancel just one, someone else might be able to confirm, but its not worth the hassle IMO.
