Hi I’m pretty new to collecting points on my new American Express and so had a question. My wife signed up for a Gold Card and we’ve hit the 20,000 bonus in that inside a month or so.
I have a BA Amex and am well on the way to hitting the 30K Bonus on that (Christmas and we bought a new car).
If she cancels her Gold Card can then refer her via my BA AMEX and she can sign up again – with me getting the referral bonus and her getting a sign up bonus?
So if this is a newbie question but any advice appreciated
No. Check out the credit cards tab at the top of the screen – you’ll find details on all cards, including signup bonus eligibility. Or look at the T’s and C’s on each card on the Amex website.
You WILL be able to refer for the BAPP card and get the bonuses (but that doesn’t require the Gold card to be cancelled).
Related question…
If I send a referral link to someone who already has the same card type as me, and they use that link to apply for a different card, do we both still get the bonus?
For example, my partner and I both have active Amex Cashback cards. If I click their referral link but apply for a Platinum card, would both of us still get the bonus? Or do Amex disallow this referral because we’re both already customers with the same card type?
As per @phantom, it’s not straightforward and the best thing you can do is to get your head round the rules by reading the articles on here. If you miss just one element of the Ts and Cs you can end up inadvertently re-setting your 2 year clock so it pays to make sure you know exactly what you’re doing!

I’ve thoroughly checked and I’m comfortable with my eligibility for the basic sign-up bonus.
I guess my question was more specifically about referrals, which the articles here don’t tend to discuss in the same detail. Is there an article on Amex referrals that I’m not finding?

The person that sends a referral would always get the referral bonus, regardless of which card the person applies for, and even if that that person is not eligible for a bonus. In your example, you would get the enhanced bonus for using a referral link to apply for the Platinum (assuming you dont have another MR earning card), and your partner would get a referral bonus.

Perfect. Thanks!
