Forums Payment cards American Express Refund of negative balance on closed account

    Hi all,

This has probably been asked before but would appreciate a quick answer as the search function didn’t yield any results.

I decided to cancel my BAPP (for now) as I was accruing companion vouchers faster than I could use them. I asked to cancel a few days before the renewal year but was advised I’d lose any avios that had not yet transferred into my BA account if I did…. I had a good chunk pending so ended up cancelling a few days into the renewal month.

When I cancelled the balance was changed to reflect the pro rata refund but the direct debit for the full amount (inc the full annual card fee) was still taken from my current account.

As a result I now have a negative balance of just under £250 sitting in the closed BAPP account. I was wondering in these circumstances how and when I’ll get this money back?

    Thanks again

Go on chat and ask for it to be refunded to your bank.

Or they can transfer to another card if you still have an Amex (usually much easier and quicker convo)

Also seems you no longer lose any Avios that are pending regardless of what they say.

I have a Platinum Amex so just went on the chat and they advised they will transfer the money against the balance on that card in the next 3-5 days, simple enough as long as that happens.

Good to know for future reference that the pending avios would have still transferred as that would have saved me a bit of faff and a few pounds if I’d known

    Thanks

I cancel cards less frequently since the waiting period went to 24 months, but I have always found that any Avios/Starpoints/Marriott/whatever that were sitting in my Amex account always transferred across on the normal date of the month after cancellation. I always waited til the sign up bonus had transferred, because if it went missing I would have struggled to get it back, but for a couple of thousand points I’d take the risk.
