Wow that’s great! Congrats! How much were taxes/fees?

    £800 total!

    Thats deal of the year!

Factoring in you have to pay 50% of the second UC points as a red member.

£400 taxes per UC LHR to Shanghai is very good. Wish the UC taxes/fees to USA were the same.

Did you hunt down the deal over a long period or it was kind of just there?

Showing approximately similar in, for example, late May.

45,000 points, £484 taxes in to Premium.
G availability on that route is patchy for late May, but there is inventory, especially on Wednesday 24th (https://travelplus.virginatlantic.com/reward-flight-finder/results/month?origin=LHR&destination=PVG&airline=VS&month=05&year=2023).

Having transited through ICN on the way to Osaka, this really does open the door for Japan flights with VS miles without the ANA lottery

Are there any points redemption opportunities from Shanghai to Korea/Japan on OW/ST partners? When I was looking, *a and cash seemed to be the most likely options?

Korean Air, China Eastern and Air China are all SkyTeam members who can get you to Korea and Japan. JAL can help you on OW.

When you say upgrade voucher I assume you mean 2-4-1? I have roughly 50k Virgin miles and 1x 2-4-1 voucher which expires next May, was thinking for a long time on what a good redemption could look like and this seems quite good!

If you are red tier, it’s a 1.5 voucher for UC. .so you’ll have to pay 22.5k + 45k for two UC seats

I thought tier only matters when using as companion voucher not upgrade voucher.

I usually shy away from using 2-4-1 as the terminology, in favour of voucher, because VS’ vouchers have always been very flexible. In fact, 2-4-1 (a la companion) is only one of the ways to use it. I have had better reward success in the past on using it as an upgrade voucher instead.

Whilst I get the prevalence of 2-4-1 and it’s history, I think it’s more confusing to call it that on VS, whereas it’s more accurate (and entirely accurate on pre—09/21 vouchers) on BA.

    Indeed, as at https://uk.virginmoney.com/virgin/credit-cards/vaa-cards/terms/reward-plus.jsp.

Never knew this. I always rejected this deal because I am a Red member I didnt think it was worth at 1.5. But this upgrade opens up some doors. I think in Rob’s articles this key piece of info is not included. Thanks.

Is it possible to book PVG-LHR and avoid ADP? How much will the taxes run?

I actually didn’t 🙂 I essentially booked 2x PE on redemption at 45k point for the pair and used the voucher to upgrade both (one way). So only cost me 45k points and voucher + fees/taxes. Yes, i am red tier. The 1.5x to UC only applies when you use it as a 241.

Yes, upgrade i.e. 241. both can be used interchangeably.

i believe this is possible, as the VS vouchers dont require you to start your journey in the UK like the Barclays one. We intend to return via BOM, probably.

How far in advance did you need to book this?

Booked the same day i started this post to leave in mid june.
