Forums Payment cards American Express Retention options are “none”

  • 2,075 posts

So a couple of months ago Amex send out a notification of the changes to the BA AMex and the email says to call to discuss options. I’d quite like the Marriot card for the 15 night bonus. Called up today to be told that my options are none, and would I like to cancel the card as that was the only thing they could offer me.

It’s apparently impossible to swap products from BA to Marriot.

They really don’t want customers any more do they.

I just went through the eligibility checker for the Marriot card and it told me I was unlikely to be approved. (experian checker).

Go through all the hassle of signing in to experian to be told my credit score is a perfect 999 and I’m eligible and pre-approved for over 30 cards including the Halifax World Elite but no Amex.

Amex really don’t want me any more!

I have BAPP and Gold, and wanted the Marriott card. Didn’t bother with any checks just applied. Received email asking to call to discuss credit limit options in regard application. They wanted me to accept a £2.5K credit limit reduction on an existing card in exchange for considering the new application. Immediately agreed and asked them to reduce Gold limit rather than BAPP, Gold to be dumped at end of free year. Waited a week or so and received Marriott card in post without any other comms. Credit limit was greater than reduction. Following day received email offering limit increase on BAPP, which was also greater than the reduction agreed to get the Marriott card.

I know financial organisations like to play the we don’t reveal our methods card, but I seriously doubt there’s any logic to much of what Amex do.

If you want it apply, eligibility checkers count for little.

I have that free credit score thing that Halifax and Lloyds offer. Frequently score drops as a result of credit utilisation, which is simply timing within the month, always pay Amex by DD, but often at 60% to 80% of limit. I once checked their suggestions to improve my credit score, they suggested getting a mortgage, I’m 64 and work two days a week, I live in my own mortgage free property.

@dougzz99 Yeah guessing it could be credit limit related with Amex. Never bother looking at those and they’ve increased them to quite eye watering levels and I rarely spend a grand a month across the two unless I’m going for a big trip spend.

I just went online and knocked 19k limit off one of the cards, we’ll see if that improves my chances

I’m 57, retired, and ditto for the property.

Last year Barclays (cashback forex free card) wrote to me in Sept saying they were considering upping my limit from 3.5k to 5k. Then wrote in Nov to say due to my change in circumstances (which hadn’t) they decided not to. They’ve just written again with the same message and what’s the betting they decide not to again. I think I spent a record amount of 1.5k this month on it as it’s all pre-spend for my upcoming Africa trip and all in various currencies.

Ok, reduced the credit limits on my Amex cards by a 5 figure sum , waited a couple of days and applied for the Bonvoy.

The response was Rejected “In particular our decision was influenced by information in your credit report”

My Experian credit report is spotless, with a 999 rating!

Lenders look at much more than credit score when their systems process a credit search. They may, for example, conclude that: you have opened too many credit cards in recent months/years and look like you desperately need cash; you churn cards regularly so you look more like a one-night-stand than marriage material; you have moved home too many times recently so are at risk of going AWOL; your borrowing trajectory suggests that things might end in tears for you unless your habits change; or that your total credit limit on all cards, including non-Amex ones, is already high in relation to your income. Not all these things are necessarily included in Experian’s Delphi credit score.

@JJ, I’m not dumb, none of those apply. It’s 2 years since I last applied for any card, have zero debt, haven’t moved home for 18 years, and as I said I reduced the ridiculous limits that Amex had increased my cards to by approx 15k. My other cards have insignificant limits. I pay my bills in full on time every month and the last time I accidentally missed any CC payment was 2003 by a couple of days.

You don’t meet their current internal criteria.

Either appeal the decision or move on.

And you’re correct – you can’t directly switch cards between different products – that’s always been the rule.

Also your “999” credit score means zilch as it’s something lenders never see or care about…

Exactly the same for me – applied for Marriott card when already holding BAPP and Plat and I had to make £5k headroom from the others, but as soon as that was in the system it went straight through.

Income is the most important metric.

My income is above the 20k minimumm it states on the application.

What I’m really annoyed about is that they’ve devalued the BA card (just as Virgin have done today) which is entirely fine as it’s the perogative giving appropriate notice as per Ts&Cs, but the email they sent stated if I didn’t like the new terms I should call to discuss my options. The only option they gave on the phone was to cancel. Wasted my time.

After being an Amex customer for well over 20 years I really don’t like being messed about and told I’m not suitable any more. I will challenge it but I don’t expect a postive result going by other reports I’ve seen here.
