Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Have been a lurker for a while but looking for some specific advice. Have 2 Barclays upgrade vouchers and will be flying business for first time with my partner, LHR > GRU. When travelling, we will have a 9 month old and Looking for best way to book.

Do I need to add an under 2 infant ticket for additional avios or is that solely for their own seat? Would they be able to be in bassinet in business?

If you want them to have a seat, you have to book them as a child.

There are bassinets in the business cabin. Bassinet allocation seems to be a bit of a lottery.

Infants have to be on your itineary, so select infant when booking.

If the infant has been born at the time you book, I think you’re just going to have to book this on the phone – you’ll probably need to do this anyway to get both of you on the same booking with your 2 vouchers and get them to add the infant at the same time. If not, any of the various permutations discussed in the articles and threads on here would work for you, and you’d then need to call to get the infant added after the birth.

You may get the bassinet seat but it’s not guaranteed – I don’t know if you can ask BA to allocate this when booking or if you’d need to pay for the relevant seats (if no BA status).

I think there’s a 10% charge for a lap infant, though can’t remember if it’s cash, avios, or both!

You can add a lap infant (under 2 years old) after the fact, so if timing is a challenge (IE: booking 12 months out), you can simply ring BA and add a lap infant to the booking at any time up until departure, though you won’t want to leave it too close, as you want to make sure that the baby’s ticket is properly issued with an e-ticket.

The cost is 10% of the Avios and 10% of the fees and taxes. So as an example, if the roundtrip fare is 90K Avios per adult + £450, then the lap infant ticket would cost 9,000 Avios + £45. Hope this helps 🙂

Ps. An added bonus is you can select seats for free once the infant is on the booking.

Just a word of advice when adding lap baby after. Me and other friends did not get that ticket “ticketed”, only found out at check in. So make sure you check it tickets to avoid the faff.
