Planning an Iceland trip in December and I notice the non in-terminal (in other words the free shuttle to your car hire location) car hire prices are significantly cheaper compared to the at the terminal prices.
Does anyone know where this location is? A 5 minute journey is one thing, but some remote location quite another.
As an aside I have previously dropped off a car rental at a commercial area that is a 10 minute walk from the airport. Could this be the offsite location that is the destination of the free shuttle?
I can’t find any more information on it.
Location for some drop off companies mentioned in OP
It’s quicker to walk than wait for the shuttle for most of the companies as long as you only have one suitcase to drag. Turn left as you leave the airport, cross the car park and you can see the buildings for Blue which is the one I went with. (best reviews and they were great)
The shuttle goes to all of them on that part of the commercial area and drops off one by one.
If you need a hotel the night before your fight back there’s https://hotelairport.is/ which is in between the car rental places and the terminal so can’t be beat for location.
Depends on the rental company, some are based in the actual city of Keflavik rather than near the airport. Yes, they will cheaper and some of them have better service than the international companies. Of course, in Iceland it’s best to shop around. If you use Google Maps you’ll be able to see where the individual offices are. They also all have an option for delivery service to the airport, but they’ll charge you for it (at Icelandic prices!)
