Apologies to @Lady London for the delay in posting.

We stayed for 2 nights over Easter weekend, taking advantage of 2 x Amex £100 cash back offers. I booked pre-paid rates and the cash back posted.

I can’t add much to Conny’s review earlier in March in terms of the amenities and “hard product”, as they say in the industry! We were very lucky to have lovely sunny weather – watching the sun go down from the outdoor pool and hot tub was really lovely; we were there from 5pm – 7pm so that most of the other guests had gone to get ready for dinner. I don’t know how appealing it would be in more typical Scottish weather (it was raining when we left on Monday and there was no one there)!

We had an identical room to the one Conny stayed in; it was our wedding anniversary and a bottle of Prosecco had been left on ice for us which was a lovely touch.

The architectural mix is a bit odd – like someone had grafted an Indigo or Kimpton hotel onto a traditional Scottish country house, but I realise that there are cost implications when extending older properties.

Given that there’s not a lot to do in the evenings or in wet weather, there was a surprising number of 20 and 30-somethings but I can imagine it’s pretty good fodder for Instagram and the like! There were also quite a lot of dogs but they all seemed quiet and well-behaved.

The food in Charlie’s restaurant was very good and well-priced for the quality and general standard of the place. Service was extremely fast and friendly. It does annoy me when they charge extra for sides, but each side dish contains enough for 2 people which made up for it a bit – unlike some places where you’re expected to pay £5 for a couple of pieces of broccoli!

There was some discussion recently about the 5% service charge! I think they must have read Conny’s review because a really nice gentleman showed us to our room and pointed out the various facilities en route. They did draw my attention to it on checkout and emphasized that it was discretionary. I felt it was about fair as we had a very pleasant stay but didn’t ask for our room to be made up due to only being there for 2 nights. (The restaurant adds its own service charge separately).

The only criticism I had was that on the first morning the restaurant was very quiet when we arrived but the staff just stood around talking until I asked someone to take our order. The eggs on the Eggs Royale were a bit undercooked so on the second morning I just got some salmon from the buffet and poached eggs from the chef on the egg and pancake station, which were done to perfection. (No tattie scones, sad face (or Lorne sausage), but maybe the establishment is too grand. I bought several packets from Morrisons in Hawick as they are surprisingly difficult to source this side of the border.) The rest of the buffet was very good, especially the cheese selection.

I would probably stay again (especially if there’s another Amex offer!) as I love Scotland and try and visit at least once a year. I have a long bucket list of historical places and try and tick off at least a couple on each trip – this time we finally got to Hermitage Castle which was closed for a long time during and after the pandemic.

Thank you for taking the time to review @NorthernLass.

It does seem worth considering for a special stay à deux.

Though bear in mind that it’s only 150 miles from us – I’m not sure it would be worth making the trip from much further away unless you had other reasons for visiting the area. We also spent 2 nights in Northumberland catching up with friends – that whole area is a bit of a hidden gem!

Thanks for the review. Quite fancy a stay here with my fiancée for a special occasion.

Back from a 1-night break with my fiancée; everything about the stay was excellent.

As far as Northern Lass question about typical Scottish weather, the spa facilities were very well used last night and this morning despite crap weather.
