Forums Payment cards American Express School fees and PayPal

    Hi everyone,

A quick question whilst I chase a looming deadline for a signup bonus. Our school doesn’t accept Amex or PayPal but does accept credit card payments (but not on the cards I need). Does anyone have any experience in using PayPal linked to an Amex to pay an account directly? A quick trial without pulling the trigger suggests a random figure of £2,000 will incur about £13.80 of fees from PayPal (and or Amex – it’s not clear). To hit the target it may be worthwhile to take the hit for the fees but was wondering if anyone has had any experience in this area?

Many thanks in advance for your suggestions/expertise.

Have you checked if your school is available on bluechain?
You can use Amex directly for a fee.

Unless PayPal have started doing a bank payment service I’ve completely missed I’m unsure what account you’re paying since you’ve said the school doesn’t take PayPal.

Or is your question what’s your experience of paying a friend or family members account £2k? And all the waffle about school fees is just superfluous information.

AFAIK the school would need to have a PayPal account, so I’m not sure how you were practising with the £2k.

With Xmas around the corner don’t you have other ways to hit the target?!

It’s the school – I’ve read a lot about others paying friends and family and have no interest in that – was looking to kill two birds with one stone and the school is a recurring payment which I’m willing to take a short term hit on with extra fees to hit the target.

@Spike-Spiegel I haven’t used PayPal in a while and I wasn’t aware of PayPal operating a direct payment to bank account system – is this something new (or newish)?

You said you were pulling the trigger which would incur £13.80 of fees, but (genuine question) – since the school doesn’t accept PayPal what are you pulling the trigger on?

If it’s the school then what’s this line about?

“ Our school doesn’t accept Amex or PayPal but does accept credit card payments (but not on the cards I need).”

If you’re really worrying about £13 of fees to get 1000’s of points then you’re more than frugal.
