Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Seeking help with multi-city open jaw 241 UK/US

  • 623 posts

I’m booking flights for my mum and sister to visit relatives in US.

Key cites they’d like to visit are LA, Denver, New Jersey.

Mum is elderly so breaking up the journey is preferable.

Going via Dublin and Madrid is ok.

I know Aer Lingus and Iberia options are available.

My questions is can you use 241 voucher across brands, say out Aer Lingus, return Iberia?

The goal is to keep taxes and fees as low as possible.

And can you fly to LA from UK/Dublin/Madrid but opt for a stopover/change in new jersey or NY and have the trip count as one leg…is there a time limit on the stopover before they consider it as two separate bookings? Even a 48hrs would work for them.

Ideal would be outbound leg with stop over in Denver or New Jersey/NYc and inbound leg stopover at the remaining one.

Sorry, realise that’s a lot of info. TIA

(NB voucher and Avios are in my sister’s name).

Have you read through any of the dedicated threads where all your questions are covered?!
The limitations of the 241 voucher will mean that there won’t really be any stopover options of the kind you’re asking about, e.g. you would use the voucher to get you to New York then you’d need a separate connecting flight to another US city,

    A few things

You can do the open jaw but not sure how you are planning on flying between NYC and LAX – that would be an AA flight so that’s not going to be bookable inside the ticket.

The other issue you will have is the increased Avios due to a mixed carrier booking so I wouldn’t even bother with that, given that the RFS on BA business redemptions will mean flat fees.

I’d see how far your mother thinks she can fly and maybe suggest the following

LHR-EWR, LAX-LHR using the 241 (short day and longish overnight) and then booking NYC-DEN and DEN-LAX using avios redemptions on AA
