Forums Other Housekeeping Separate ‘Airports’ thread ?

  • WaynedP 258 posts

Any merit to introducing a separate, individual Airport thread containing advice on lounges, security, passport control, parking etc facilities ?

Seem to be a fair few included in the generic “Destinations” thread at the moment which doesn’t particularly enhance visibility or ease-of-use for either general destination advice or finding specific airport information.

The problem is people won’t use them!

How many almost identical threads are started every day? Whether it’s the BA Hols double TP offer or using a 2-4-1 or wanting help with flight disruption compo?

And that’s before you start counting the people just posting in the chat thread ignoring the fora totally.

And even when people post in the right forum they still CBA to look to see if their question has been asked (almost certainly) already!

What would be helpful (but likely can’t happen due to the forum software and the limited staff of HfP) is to have some thread curation with threads closed and a link to a main thread provided and a note saying “please continue the discussion here ….”

I think it’s a great idea, people who know how to use the site would definitely use this.

But I feel your pain, @BAFlyer!

I agree that it would be a good idea.
Though there may be many who CBA scrolling though the many pages to find their answers, it may enable easy access to info for HfP to do Airport specific reviews based on forum data. I think this could be incredibly useful.

Same on every forum, people are too lazy to look stuff up themselves. I post on a glass forum and at least five times a week there’s a whiney “I love this stuff, how do I get started post” or “where do I buy X” even though there’s a Wiki and an online supplies link with full info next to the create a new post button.

It seems impossible for them to put the question into a google/bing either and find the dozens of getting started guides.

I’m intrigued now, @davefl – wine glasses? Stained glass? Double glazing?

It doesn’t help that there isn’t a functional search facility or notifications on replies.
If those were in place, I suspect you’d get less duplicate threads.

Too many variables that can affect the experience, especially security and passport control. Can vary wildly depending on number of flights at the time, type of flights and region they fly to.
Lounges can have a thread though. You’ll still end up mostly with questions like “I’ll be there at 6pm. Will it be crowded?”

Honestly, a separate thread just for airport stuff would be super helpful. Right now, all the info on lounges, security, and airport tips is kind of lost in the general ‘Destinations’ thread, and it’s a pain to sift through if you’re just looking for specific airport advice.

Yep, MAN could have its own thread.

Also Rob, needs to add a note in the daily chat thread advising readers to use individual threads.
Someone today posted an Amex offer as a new thread! 🙈

’forums’ or ‘fora’ (in this context)? Harking back to a recent newbie post, can we have a separate forum on that for us pedants?
