Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Short-checking luggage on British Airways

Does anyone know what is the BA policy on short-checking luggage when the itinerary has a long layover. E.g., if I arrive in LHR in the morning and depart in the evening would they allow me to check the luggage just to LHR so that I can access the contents during the layover?

Where are you flying from? In general the answer is no although you may be able to persuade a 3rd party agent to do so (if they know how).

You can request your bag at the desk in LHR baggage reclaim but may have a long wait before it appears.

    Thanks @Thegasman

I would be flying from Singapore.

I had no idea you could request an in-transit bag at baggage reclaim, that would be a great solution assuming we’re talking about an hour or so rather than all day. Any idea how long this typically takes?

Considering normal bags are frequently an hr plus, I wouldn’t plan on doing that ! Singapore agents are generally competent so I’d think you’d have a good chance of this there (especially as ex-EU is probably less on their mind than ex-USA flights where they’re very hot on this kind of thing!)

Out of interest can you not just carry on what you need? If you’ve got a spare bag in your allowance then you could carry it on and then check it in upstairs after you’ve used it if you didn’t want to carry your stuff around all day, or use left luggage.

If you request your bags at LHR and recheck them later to a same day flight then BA will likely charge you for it.

The best option would be to put whatever you need for the day in your carry on bag.

The idea was to meet friends in London for the day and give them some gifts, one of which would be a fancy kitchen knife from Japan, hence checked luggage. Sounds like it might be more trouble than it’s worth though…

I couldn’t find the answer on BA. My senario is flying a morning flight LHR-DUB CE then a same day evening flight DUB-LHR /overnight/-MIA CW would it be possible to check some luggage in DUB and some in LHR the following morning asking because it would be easier to check the hand luggage in at LHR as travelling using a mobility scooter. Thanks

You can check in extra bags between sectors – a few years ago we flew GCM-LHR-MAN and security made us check in a bottle of duty free rum at LHR even though it was in the appropriate sealed bag and we’d had it on a 12 hour flight with us already! I think one of the BA customer service desks sorted it out for us.

This will work if your onward flight departs from LCY or LGW which is possible on some routes.
    The sequence would be:-

    SIN – LHR – LGW – destination

Personally having flown BA out of Changi many times I would have high confidence you’d be able to get a bag short checked to London if you explained why etc.

Just be careful when you say “I have a knife”

Thanks all for your advice. Continuing from LCY to my final destination is actually more convenient than going back to LHR so that will work perfectly!

Rather than starting a new topic, I thought I’d resurrect this one as it’s a similar question.

One one ticket, I am flying BA LAX/LHR/DUB with an overnight layover at LHR. In F, if this makes any difference.

Will I have issues short checking my luggage to LHR? I’d need my luggage for the overnight hotel in London.

If you just need your bag for one night in London, surely you can take anything you need in hand luggage?

I suspect if you still have 1 bag to give them to check through as a hostage to end destination, then an explanation about needing the other bag at an earlier drop-off point along the way has a better chance of being accepted.

There are many good reasons why I might want to leave 1 full bag in London then continue with the other one checked to the final destination. The problem is that instructions from BA to checkin staff particularly in the US, hardened some years ago and if its just 1 bag they are highly likely to refuse even if your reasons are good true and reasonable.

You will get your bags back without even asking if your connection lands in one airport but departs from another. eg LCY vs LHR vs LGW mix. You should also be able to get your baggage short checked if your stop is overnight but it seems there is some risk this could be irrationally and unfairly refused. I’d kick up a fuss if so if I had a particular need such as carrying personal medical stuff if that was tried. But need to understand there can be some very obdurate poorly trained checkin staff at some locations particularly if they are subcontracted.

If able to short check you can always put the knife on a smaller bag. Check it in. Pick it up at LHR and then take it with you as hand luggage.
