I’ve just returned from an incredible 10-night trip to the Conrad Maldives (on HH points), followed by a week in Sri Lanka. We flew there and back via BA Club World using Avios and a 2 for 1 voucher, but don’t have any status with BA.
We booked a cash economy flight from Male to Colombo via Sri Lankan, who we have never flown with before. At the gate, we were told we had been upgraded to business class and enjoyed a full business experience (lie-down seats, full dinner service etc) on the short flight.
I’m really perplexed as to why this was as we have no status, and the flight wasn’t overbooked. Business was very quiet.
I was wondering if it was perhaps our Conrad host at Male? Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? I thought comp upgrades were a myth!
My daughter and friend – on her first booking, second segment, was upgraded to business on United last year. Why? No idea. She thought I’d pulled a string with points magic … but in fact it was just good fortune.
