Forums Payment cards American Express Standard Avios Amex

    Hi

Having held the BAPP and achieved my Companion voucher, I decided to downgrade to the free BA card as I saw little value in keeping the Premium.

I’m now not sure I see any value in that – would I not be better off going to a Amex Rewards card and earn MR instead of Avios? Presumably in a worst case scenario, I can just transfer these to Avios anyway but at least I have the flexibility.

Any thoughts? Would Amex “take offence” at yet another change?

    Thanks

Yes, the card will hold a grudge against you

Nothing wrong with your idea, it will mean a new hard search (and another when you want the BA PP again) – perhaps the same applies to the BA blue card now too though?

Consider whether it might be a better punt to ‘go fallow’ and use a different card completely for a couple of years, enabling you to get a Nectar/Marriott, BA PP and Platinum SUB again.

Switching to the Barclaycard Avios will allow you to get a whole set of new Amex SUBs in a couple of years.

Personally I think the flexibility of MR points only makes sense if you value a specific non-Avios currency. If you can’t get good value out of hotel points for example or aren’t working towards a Virgin redemption, the ability to convert MR points to these currencies doesn’t add much.

Without more info on how and what you use points on it is difficult to give views. If you have not had a MR earning card in the last 2 years I would suggest next time the Plat bonus uplift comes up, consider sign up for that.

I also hold a nectar card in between premium cards to get amex offers rather than go cold turkey for 24 months. Other suggest on Barclays or Virgin cards are good options if you need more of those points.

But don’t apply for a card without the uplift in bonus

You mean the Sainburys nectar? right.

Thanks. Barclays has been used too. I think I may well cancel Amex all together and get the clock starting again. Thanks for advice.
