Forums › Hotel loyalty schemes › IHG One Rewards › Suite upgrades – usable on reward nights yet?
-
I just used my upgrade voucher from last year, for the Cardiff Voco – the only stay I have coming up I could use it. I’m just coming up to my 20 nights this year, while I was on the phone I asked if I was right in thinking the upgrade wasn’t available on reward stays. Most of my regular stays are in hotels where the upgarde either isn’t available, or isn’t worth it. The agent replied that this was due to change as of the 1st of June following feedback (“it may push back another month, but it’s as good as a done deal”)… if this is the case, it will be another suite upgrade certificate for me, ready for my all-points booked holiday in September!
I read an article yesterday saying the upgrade certificate can now be used for reward stays.
Spoke to the IHG rewards service centre today.
They said the upgrade is only applicable on cash rates. Not on points or points + cash rates.
However, they said any cash rate is in-scope for an upgrade, not just the best-flex rate. They confirmed that a non-refundable rate is also in-scope.
Interestingly, they said if the cash rate also included breakfast, then the breakfast would also apply to the suite (useful to those who dropped down to Platinum).I might call again tomorrow to see if the next agent says the same thing.
Rang the IHG Rewards service centre again.
The agent advised that points bookings are in-scope for the confirmable suite upgrade benefit.Could you actually do it though? Agents have claimed lots of things about these vouchers, but actually using them for what they claim is another matter

As my stay is still a few weeks away, I was unable to get them to process it.
Called Diamond Line today to try and use a confirmable Suite Upgrade voucher for 2 weeks time but because I booked a non refundable rate they can’t do it. Hotel say they have already upgraded me to a ‘superior’ room, even though they don’t list them on their website (CP Docklands). SUggested the terms had changed to allow any cash rate to be upgraded but computer say no!
Seems like a really messy process.
I can confirm that reward nights are now eligible. I do not know about nonflexible rates.

Can you share your experience please BJ?
Apologies if this has been answered and I have missed it.
Generally when I book hotels directly with the chain (IHG, Hilton, Radisson, etc.) I invariably book each night separately. It means if an individual night subsequently reduces in rate I can benefit from the price fluctuation, and I have never not had a hotel keep us in the same room for the duration of our stay (I’ve probably jinxed that now!).
My query wrt to the Confirmable Suite Upgrade Voucher is whether it can be used against a 5 consecutive night stay in the same hotel, but where each individual night has it’s own booking reference? Does anybody have experience of using one in this way?
Just called up and requested for HI Resort Patong, no issues at all. Probably wasted the voucher though as I know this hotel is great with upgrades anyway. I was going to try it for HI Suites Shin-Osaka, glad I didn’t as we got upgraded to a suute there from base room anyway. Wiser use might have been 3 nights HI Golden Mile in HK but I’m still dithering on Ambassador free night at IC. Rensining stays thjs gear are zhIX so had to use it someplace. I figured you were already counting on yours for IC Bangkok, good luck with thst uf you fo decide on IC.

Thanks for the info, and yes, IC Bangkok lined up, but have the Indigo on Wireless Road as a backup – the suites in that place look really quirky.
I was told on my long-stay at HI Suites Shin-Osaka last year that they will always upgrade Diamonds and Platinums to suites as the majority of the rooms in the hotel are suites hence the name!
So don’t bother using vouchers there.
Good to know @meta, and thanks to you and others for recommending this hotel. It worked very well and was excellent value for money or points. I would certainly use it again. We enjoyed shopping for Japanese things at the supermarket a few nights and taking them back to the room to prepare. It all felt much more relaxing than Umeda or Namba.
@Aston, have never been in or knew anyone who stayed at Indigo so cannot provide any useful comment. However, every Indigo I’ve stayed elsewhere has been good. As for IC surroundings, traffic jams are common on Wireless Road especially during rush hour (long in Bangkok) so use BTS or motorbike taxi at those times whichever hotel you stay.
Today, two agents at the IHG rewards service centre (with a HUACA between) denied that points can be used.
One even went and spoke to his support people to confirm. And now the IC Bangkok has run out of suites.
Being unable to use a suite upgrade voucher any earlier than t-14 days seems to limit your choices, especially at peak times like this.
Regardless of whether points bookings qualify.Well, it’s off to the Millennium Hilton Riverside in that case.

Enjoy, I hope the Hilton has got rid of the disposable plastic gloves at the breakfast buffet?
Any update on this?
Could do with using a suite upgrade voucher on a points booking for IC Cancun for August.Still doesn’t seem possible based on everything I’ve seen.

They have!
If one applies a suite upgrade voucher, and later cancels the stay (during the refundable window), is the suite upgrade voucher restored?
Yes but it may not return the instant you cancel the booking.
Thanks. Yes, just found in the terms that returning it can take 5 working days
