Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Terminal 5 Baggage meltdown

  • 127 posts

Just landed at Terminal 5 to find that there’s no bags available for anyone from any flight. Fair to say there’s a lot of rather unhappy people, myself included. Need to find a form on the BA site but it’s not loading properly. The website is probably having a meltdown now due to the 1000s of people having to complete the forms for their baggage!

Thanks for this alert. Is it a walkout by workers? Or a technical breakdown?

I don’t know, they weren’t giving that information.

Connecting Euro to domestic and just had this email… Bag is some where near T5C, we are queueing to board at T5A.

“We’re sorry that there’s a problem with the baggage system at London Heathrow and we can’t guarantee that your bags will travel with you. Teams from the airport are working to fix the problem and we’re doing what we can to help.

We know this isn’t a great start to your journey and we’ll do our best to ensure your bags travel with you.

For now, please check-in for your flight as normal and make sure you carry any essential items, including medication, in your hand baggage. Please remember, liquids must be no more than 100ml.

If your bag is delayed and you’re out of pocket, we’ll cover the costs for any reasonable essentials. Don’t forget to keep your receipts. You can raise a claim at here or talk to a member of the British Airways team when you arrive.

Thanks for your understanding. We look forward to seeing you soon.

    British Airways”

4 day border force strike starts tomorrow morning at all terminals… so that’ll be running better than normal.

Indeed, a shame when we all look forward to a strike for better service

Power failure in the baggage hall, apparently. We’ve just waited two hours for bags to come out from the Edinburgh flight. A lot of bags arrived without the flight being shown on the screen and without an announcement.

You’re making the assumption that the Home Office has drafted in the military this time but I’ve seen no reports of that happening.

Yes things do go better when you open all the desks with drafted in staff who are only doing the basic checks. They would work better all the time but the HO won’t recruit to enable that to happen.

My limit is now an hour and if they havn’t appeaed by then then I go to the bag desk and say I can’t wait any longer so you can deliver them to my home.

In January it took them 50 minutes just to allocate a crew to unload the plane (already 2 1/2 hrs late) and according to the MMB bagagge feature they eventually appeared two hours after landing but I’d gone well before then.

And at the begining of this month there was another bet problem and the ladies at the desk handed me a form with a QR code which then generated a form to fill in which I did on the train home and the bags were delived two days later. A friend who was waiting from the same flight later told me it was an hr and 45 mins before the bags appeared.

The main issue is the lack of information and a lack of any sort of contingency. Making the odd announcement that can barely be heard is useless. They have hundereds of screens in the baggage hall yet don’t use them to display any info either.

My problem with that approach is I travel frequently to the extent that a 3 day wait – day of arrival, then processing, then awaiting delivery – can leave me without the baggage when about to leave on my next trip. Also I swear the companies they use to deliver delayed baggage moonlight as potato trucks cos my bags have alrways arrived like someone has tumbled them around in muck. Now with luggage trackers, my preference is to have the bag held at the airport and I’ll pick it up. On one tight turnaround between trips, I collected the case at T2 having been brought in via the staff lane then went straight with it to T5 to check it in.

Yes if that works for you then absolutly fine but as a leisure traveller it works for me and I’ll likely have a different attitude if the bags were delayed at my destination

This was the case yesterday. The odd announcement which I couldn’t quite hear clearly, nor believe what I thought I heard them say, that no baggage would be arriving from any flight!. No information about the problem on the screens (which had huge numbers of people crowded around trying to read them, just 8 pages of flight details with the carousel numbers. I managed to speak to a member of BA staff that walked past me and they explained the situation, that there was no point whatsoever waiting as no bags would be delivered to the baggage hall. That I should go and take a form with a QR code (joining a huge queue of people), or search for the baggage portal on the BA site.

I tried to use the baggage portal for 30min last night but it kept failing to load. Seemed to be breaking under the pressure. So I tried my luck with the BA live chat. Spoke to someone for 20min who began setting up my report, then got disconnected. Reconnected to someone new and then it took a further 40min to set it up! Once it had been set up I discovered they’d entered lots of the details incorrectly, but thankfully I was able to amend most of them, but not the description of the bag. No matter how many times I edited that and saved it, it then showed as the incorrect description!

    Looks like issue is sorted.

Our bags are in EDI now, must have been on first flight up the hill so hopefully they will get to us today.

Most annoying thing was arriving home at midnight and finding there is no toothpaste in the house….

It’s one of the first things that gets used. Loads of brushes, no tiny Colgates.

I’ve got a pot of tooth powder which never runs out and is very handy for those HBO trips where liquid space is at a premium! Needless to say, it’s caused a bit of angst at MAN security …

It will be like that for most of thr day to be honest given the scale of the meltdown,

The first time in January it was just my flight that appeared to have an issue so they were able to deal with it quickly and I got them back the Tuesday later afternoon rolling a late Monday afternoon arrival.

The next update will be an update saying they’ve passed them onto the courier company .

I am feeling very, very sorry for British Airways.

LHR T5 baggage has been a problem from the start.
You ever had a car like that?

Monty Python were years ahead, 1980 I’m so worried, opening lines:

I’m so worried about what’s happening today,
In the Middle East, you know?
And I’m so worried about the baggage retrieval
    System they’ve got at Heathrow.

Perhaps it’s starting to show it’s age?

T5 itself has been open for just over 16 years so parts will be hitting the stroppy teenage years!

I think it was a power issue rather than the baggage system itself. That’s something of a national issue that’s creeping up on us as the grid can’t distribute as much as we are generating.

The T5 baggage system may be 16+ years old but of course the newer T2 still operates with the very antiquated T1 system that must be over 40 years old so very susceptible to failure until it is replaced in the right location with the whizzy new Beumer system that is a huge technology leap. Currently the newest system is in the oldest active terminal building.

Just called the Amex Platinum number to ask what cover the travel insurance gives me if any in this situation but they’re closed for the day.

Does anyone here know what the answer would be? I’m staying in Central London, if I buy a few things which are in the suitcase will they reimburse me? Trouble is I have no idea when my suitcase will turn up

BA will reimburse you for the costs of essentials.
