I rarely buy points but pre covid splurged on Hilton for a trip to the USA which subsequently never happened due covid. Now I mostly delete any such email.

HfP had an article on IHG 100% bonus which made me check out a holiday I am taking over New Year.

I had a week in an IC resort booked that was costing £2200 for a club room. The entry price was £185 and I realised a significant saving could be made on the entry room price. I contacted the hotel who offered a $90++ upgrade on a points booking. So I bought 300,000 points this afternoon for around 0.0039p and promptly booked the base room and accepted the upgrade charge. My total was then £1416. Now the room is smaller but as an Ambassador I’ll pick up some sort of upgrade so I was happy to sacrifice room size for a near £800 saving.

I then had enough points remaining to book a further 6 nights elsewhere eliminating over £900 in cash costs and getting a more flexible cancellation policy.

    So thanks HfP and Rob

No, not this time. That is probably my favourite hotel in the world, I feel myself relaxing as I step out of the car and the gong is struck. Been going there for over 20 years and my first visit was to the hotel across the road. It was just after the bombing and hotels were empty. My wife and infant daughter walk across the road each morning with the gate guards stopping the bikes. We used their pool, had lunch, paid cash and were treated so well we vowed to return and stay.

Over the years I have had many a happy family vacation there and last year had two weeks to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The suite we were given was bigger than many of my homes have been over the years.

This time we are trying trying Phu Quoc in Vietnam for a week. They have been very helpful but I am under no illusions that it will be anything like Bali

Sounds like a very well executed points booking, bravo.

Can I ask how you are getting to Phu Quoc? We’ve been once before but it’s tricky to get to if not already in Vietnam and not sure what routes are available internationally.

We had a fabulous stay at the JW Marriott Phu Quoc back in 2018 when it was a much lower award category, so ended up with an outrageously good redemption cost of approx £90/night. Daft theme (fictional “university”) but high end design throughout and fabulous service, the only slight fly in the ointment being the rubbish washing up on the beaches (a known problem at certain times of year on the island).

The Regent in Phu Quoc with lounge access is exceptional in my opinion and much as I like the IC Bali, it’s not as good.
Not stayed in the IC next door but visited the pools and grounds which were very nice.

Perhaps not as impressive a redemption, but I have found a hotel in Aus which I’m interested in booking.

Underlying rate looks to be 0.6p (24,500 per night with pts, £145 cash) Using the 90% offer, I estimate I can get £580 worth of rooms for about £400 worth of points)

    Problem/Question:
I need 2 rooms, for 2 nights. IHG only allow you to book 1 room at a time for redemptions- is there any way of knowing if a 2nd reward room will be available once I’ve booked the first? Will I be able to book 2 rooms under one name, one at a time?

No (but if the 2nd room isn’t available you can then cancel the 1st one for free, so no risk)
Yes (I currently have 3 reward rooms booked for a stay later in the year, all in my name)

You can actually book up to 9 reward rooms…

Thanks really helpful. I guess my only hesitation is that if the 2nd room is unavailable and I cancel, I’m left with a load of points with no other immediate use for. Probably worth the gamble, could always have 1 points booking and the other cash (I can book 2 cash rooms so guess the inventory is there)

Worked out well, my first hotel redemption.
2 rooms, 2 nights at voco Brisbane next Easter for 98,000 pts. Thanks for the tips
