With the next few Easters falling in April, it’ll
be hard for us to get an “early start” on the hols.
With Japan in mind, would a train ride/overnight stay in the Tohoku
area be worth it, as things seem to go on until later April there?
Tohoku is very nice, especially Sendai and Matsushima. There is also the new Michinoku coastal trail.

With respect to @meta, I found Tohoku and Sendai pretty boring, especially if you’ve seen other Japanese cities and coastal areas. I’m sure it will be fine if all you really want to see are blossoms and don’t care much for where you see them.
I’ve lived in Tohoku for over a year. It’s not boring at all. Michinoku is actually now the new hotspot for domestic tourists.
Matsushima’s beautiful nature was inspiration for Bashō’s haiku. And Sendai is known for having the best Tanabata matsuri in the whole of Japan. Also close to Sendai is Ogawara with eight-km stretch of cherry blossom trees along the river. Funaoka too is lovely with its special sakura festival. Sendai is also the home of gyūtan (grilled beef tongue). And the list goes on…
