Any good recommendations for £150-200 budget pn?
I’m finding £200 a night is the baseline for a reasonably economical hotel (with gym and okay location) and find that pretty high for something that I’m not really looking forward to.
Might be the case that the budget needs to come up but as it’s our first time in Tokyo and with just 3 nights, I know we won’t spend much time there.
Thanks in advance
Look at Japanese hotels instead of western/international chains.
Since you are interested in visiting and not spending time at the property:look for Japanese hotels (brands like Tokyu Inn, APA, Sotesu Fresa, etc.) and book a twin room (a double will be “small” by our standard).
I would rarely pay more than £100 a night in Japan but some people do want the comfort of a familiar brand. My main issue with large chains is that they tend to be in new boring places while the local chains have smaller hotels in better locations.
We stayed at ONE@Tokyo at about £80pn and found it very pleasant for the price — small rooms but well appointed and very clean, bottomless free teas in the lobby with lots of good flavours, a small rooftop, helpful staff. It’s close to Skygarden train station so a little further out but we didn’t mind as it was like going into central London from Maida Vale, say.
I booked my Dad hotels in Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo last October. All Japanese chains, central and highly rated, small but very clean rooms. The most expensive was £80 a night.

Would you mind naming the hotels please?

Couple that I’ve stayed at more than once and was happy with:-
Tokyo: https://uk.hotels.com/ho228256/the-knot-tokyo-shinjuku-tokyo-japan/
Osaka: https://uk.hotels.com/ho725230528/hotel-monterey-le-frere-osaka-osaka-japan/
Check room sizes.
Take a look at Agoda, it is part of the Booking Holdings Industrial Complex, but Singapore-based and traditionally has better deals in Asia. I didn’t use then in Tokyo but did for a ryokan in Hakone
Have a look at Yokohama. Not too far and easy access to/from Haneda .
The Intercontinental have large rooms from £105 in October. There is also a new Hilton
Stayed at the IC last year.Good shopping and dining options nearby. For Kyoto I can recommend: Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Kyoto Premier (walking distance to mostly everything)
