We are a family of 4 in UK (2 young kids) and have the
platinum cash back,
BA free Amex (which I never manage to use the vouchers as dates are never available when needed and my partner is the main card holder ) and
got gold Amex a few years ago.And last month a friend referred us and got platinum £575/year to use the benefit of travel and car insurance (was previously purchasing those separately), which I think makes the Platinum worth the yearly fee. And yes I’m aware we don’t qualify the bonus sign up points
Am I correct assuming I don’t need the Amex gold card and the 2nd card fee? I was planning to cancel after I transferred the membership points 52,000 into Avios or something. And doing most my spending on platinum cash back.
Do i this right ?
If you already have a free points earning card (BA Amex), why did you take out the Gold? What additional benefits did you expect to get from it in exchange for the annual fee?
And similarly for the recent Platinum application, is £575 less than what you would pay for travel and hire car insurance when purchased separately (I’d be surprised if so)?If you ask yourself these questions, then that should help direct your strategy about which cards to retain.
Scott.
The Platinum travel insurance is so restrictive in its exclusion of existing conditions, that anyone able to take advantage of it would get very inexpensive travel insurance anyway.
If you have the plat MR card, you should not need to transfer out your points from gold card as they should be (unless something messed up) be in the same point account and having the plat card will keep your points alive.
Sounds like you don’t need the BA card.
The gold card – depends on whether you make it work for you? sounds like not. For some people the deliveroo and double points make sense. If not close it down no point paying the fee. It seems you had it for a few years so presume you have done the sums and it has made sense before.
what second card fee are you referring to?

Amex don’t always link a new MR-earning card to your existing card’s MR balance. I had to have mine manually combined.
