Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Planning a trip to New York from 21st to 25th July this year. I’ve got about 100k Avios + 100k Amex points. With the buy IHG points bonus, I’ve calculated that it’s worth buying IHG points to stay at the Intercontinental Barclay (38k points a night / $327 a night). Just the flights that I’m struggling with (£474 return on JetBlue). Any suggestions on cheaper flight options? Can’t find any Avios availability for those dates unfortunately. Thanks v much in advance!

@hafar That’s a good current rate for the Barclay so I’d definitely consider locking that in with the current 100% bonus points sale. £150ish a night for a NYC hotel of that quality in July is a steal. Do factor in the $45 per night ‘amenity fee’ though, which is also charged on reward nights apparently, remembering that this can be used against F&B etc…

On the flights front, I think the taxes, fees and charges on either a BA or Virgin economy redemption is going to be £300-400 with another 40-50k miles on top, so I’d say you’re not going to beat Jet Blue that way.

To be honest, a long weekend in NYC for about a bag of sand is a pretty good deal! Just be prepared to spend the same again on F&B (with tips!).

Just got back from there ourselves and it’s a great city for a short break – enjoy 🙂

Have you checked Norse from Gatwick?

Aer Lingus via Dublin is always worth a look because you clear immigration there, so the time spent on the connection is effectively written off by time saved at the other end.

Note the standard reward rooms at the Barclay will be tiny..

Thank you all! Jetblue appears to be the cheapest option for now. No longer booking the Intercontinental Barclay as it looks like there’s been a Legionnaire’s Disease outbreak: https://gothamist.com/news/nyc-health-officials-investigate-midtown-hotel-after-legionnaires-outbreak

Thought I’d share in case anyone else was thinking of booking the same!
