Forums › Payment cards › American Express › United ‘spend £500, get £250 off’ Amex offer
-
Due to various chopping and changing of plans, we have found ourselves wanting to book something today.
However, the offer ends tomorrow – is making a purchase today enough to trigger the discount?
TIA
For all Amex offers it’s the transaction processing date that’s important, not the ledger date.
I might have screwed up… I literally used this offer last minute, and I think I might have been a few seconds too late – Amex verification code arrived before midnight, but I think I clicked it a few seconds after midnight. So far, the transaction appears as pending (but on the 24th), and the email confirmation from United also says 24th. How likely am I that Amex rejects it?
@XmaX – you have an email confirmation? That’s a good start.
Our transaction on the 23rd, and nil by email.
edit: may have misunderstood – thought it was the Amex offer trigger email
No Amex trigger email. I’ve used this offer twice in the past, and always booked in the evening of the last day. In both cases, offer trigger email came 2 days later around 5am.
I have actually contacted Amex to ask if the transaction shows as 24th of 25th, and they said 24th. That’s what shows on the Amex website… until I actually click on the transaction where it shows 25th.
Super frustrating. I actually clicked ‘Purchase’ at 23:59, but forgot about the SafeKey approval. By the time it arrived and I confirmed, it was 00:00:02 🙁
Now I need to make the decision if I cancel the booking within the free 24h cancellation period (it’s basic economy, so can’t make cancellation/changes afterwards), or hope Amex honours the offer.
Also booked last minute, well not literally like you, but put 3 transactions through last night between 10 & 11, no emails received here, however I did get an app alert over night saying thanks for redeeming the United offer, never seen an app alert before, must be new, hope that is enough, emails have been a bit hit and miss for me lately, I booked ATG tickets a few days ago and nothing yet, I booked my Heathrow parking via JustPark this morning and got the email already.
I booked 19th May at 16:00
Purchase showed as 19th MAyGot Amex confirmation email 21st May 04:29
Got refund 21st MayI booked 19th May at 16:00

Got refund 21st MayThanks – purchased 23rd and it showed up as the 23rd on statement, so fingers crossed the refund gets processed correctly.
@XmaX – did you end up cancelling?
@XmaX – did you end up cancelling?Yeah, I cancelled. I was considering risking it (especially with a written confirmation from Amex that it was charged on the 24th), but I also discovered that the dates I booked weren’t exactly ideal for me, so ended up cancelling. Hopefully this offer appears again!
Booked on 22nd, showed as pending for several days. Has now posted showing original booking date of the 22nd and credit was posted on 24th. No emails received.
…and of course the offered triggered in the end, despite being 2 seconds too late. Too bad I cancelled the flight.

That is very rotten luck @XmaX
Meanwhile over here, whilst both transactions were on time, one email has triggered, one other has not, and neither credit has been received as of yet 🙄
After a little bit of a panic my credit is now showing. I did it on the 24th, credit shows as 27th but only came through today. Return flight to NYC for 518 so works out at 268. And the return leg is via LGA-YUL-LHR on Air Canada but on UA code so maybe that caused (slight) delay / panic at my end…
Both credits are now showing 😁
Maybe the delay was due to the bank holiday weekend – something to note if we are lucky enough to get this offer again.
