Hi all – I have booked a trip to Barbados for my family (myself, wife and our infant son) next month through BA Holidays and paid in cash. We’re flying premium economy (although BHD – LHR no PE exists so presumably economy). I would like to explore options for upgrading to business and wondered if anybody could advise the best approach? I have two companion vouchers, one Barclays upgrade voucher (although unless I’ve missed something these won’t be helpful), and 10k avios points (but would prefer not to use them unless only a small amount are required)…
What is the best/cheapest approach to pay cash to upgrade? Call BA now and enquire? Call closer to the time? Wait and ask at check in on the day of travel? Any help much appreciated!
Many thanks, Matt
You are correct that you won’t be able to use any of your vouchers to upgrade a holiday booking. You’d normally need 50k avios on a peak date (most of April is peak due to Easter) to upgrade 2 adults one way – though I’m not sure if the introduction of RFS pricing on long haul has affected this at all.
You can certainly enquire at check-in but the CW cabin might well be full by then if you’re travelling over the Easter period. It’s worth calling BA holidays and asking about both avios and cash upgrades as they will be able to advise you of the available options.
Also – I’m just wondering if you have a plan to increase your avios balance substantially so you can use all those vouchers?!
Many thanks for your response. You’re right, the most logical place to start is speaking BA Hols so will give that a go.
Re avios, 10k was actually a typo! I have 180k. I commute for work though so use avios for 2 flights per week, so am reluctant to spend too many at once. However 50k for a one way upgrade is tempting..!
That makes more sense! Note you would need reward availability in the CW cabin to upgrade with avios – I think this is going to be unlikely at this point.
Just had a quick look on SeatSpy and there’s no outbound CW availability in April apart from 5 seats on the 13th! I imagine those may have been a late cancellation. These do happen so it’s worth checking regularly if you’d really like to upgrade.
