I am looking for a flight to the US with avios. Currently there is availability in business on the way there, but economy only on the return.
Should availability open up in J on the return, could I ‘upgrade’ the above ticket by paying the difference in avios (+ any extra taxes)? Or would I have to completely cancel and start again?
You can upgrade if availability appears, but only to the next cabin up, so you need to bear this in mind when booking.

That is true for a revenue booking.
Is that also true for an avios booking?
If so I would be worried about losing the outbound J booking if I needed to cancel. In the above case would I be better booking as two one-ways, so I can simply just cancel the Y segment that has had new J availability open up, and rebook in J?
That’s my understanding. Availability to the US is usually pretty good though, so I’m surprised there’s only economy available. What route/travel period are you looking at?
@points_worrier – with a BA Avios booking it’s cancel and rebook in the higher class anyway and it will all be repriced – Avios and cash. You can move up as many classes as you wish.
Will the original J seat on the outbound be protected though, or is there a risk of it not coming back into the inventory?

It says here that you can upgrade award flights with avios, but only into the next cabin, unless I’ve misinterpreted it.

Yes. The OP can either call and ask them to change the return if J becomes available and keep it all on the same booking or make a new, separate booking and call just to cancel the Y return.

It says you can upgrade reward flights, but that’s meaningless; how does that work? It is cancel and rebook in a higher class.
Sorry to hijack but where is the upgrade function gone in the MMB screen? I have to book economy by default for Europe work trips but can then upgrade if I wish and get a part refund. But I can’t see the upgrade option on any of my upcoming bookings.

The forced new design seems to have annoyingly killed it. Another enhancement lol. I noticed before and thought this was just me as I only have avios bookings so couldn’t upgrade
