Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Upgrading one leg of companion voucher -cost?

  • 4 posts

I have a flight booked for my daughter GLA/LHR/SAN using Avios. The rest of the family were paid using companion vouchers in business class. I could only get economy for her GLA/LHR leg. Seats then became available in business on the GLA/LHR flight and I phoned to upgrade. Initially I was told that as the domestic leg was a reward flight then there shouldn’t be much extra to pay but they would send me an email to contact them when it had been calculated. When I phoned I was told the extra taxes would be £166. Does anyone know if this is correct? It seems excessive for a domestic leg that is part of an Avios redemption. Sorry if this has been covered before.

This is probably because in making the upgrade, which BA actually treats as a cancellation and rebooking, the whole trip has been repriced so you are seeing the increase in BA surcharges that have occurred since your original booking date.

It will be what @JDB said. I recently did similar to this and was only charged the difference in Avios price (which I since learned is now priced off the £1 + Avios price) being 6,500 Avios with no additional fees due. But then I upgraded within 24 hours of booking.

The bulk of the £166 will be increased fuel surcharges from LHR-SAN since you made the booking so I imagine your daughter will probably wish to stay in economy for that price. If she is going business on the long haul leg I believe she should still be able to use the lounge at Glasgow.
