I’m a rookie so apologies if this is a silly question, I’ve searched the forum and googled but can’t find a definitive answer. Is it possible to book BA reward seats and then pay to upgrade? Planning trip to Japan in late 2023 and aware business class reward seats are hens teeth.
In a word, no.
You can upgrade a cash ticket using avios, but there has to be avios reward availability in the class you want to upgrade to.
Try Rob’s article here: https://www.headforpoints.com/2020/04/08/how-to-upgrade-british-airways-flights-with-avios-2/
You can change the booking if Avios seats are available. Worth a seatspy subscription to alert you if they open up. It used to be one of the better destinations for availability! Otherwise the only option would be cash at the airport on the day if seats were available
