Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Upgrading when paid for seat selection

  • 30 posts

    Hello

    I have booked an open jaw- out to JNB returning via CPT in business using a companion voucher. I have paid for seat selection on the outward flight.

    My question is, if I were to phone and upgrade my outward flight (to JNB) to First, would I be refunded for the seat selection? Is there anyone out there that has done this and can share their experience?

    F seats not currently available by the way, hence not called to find out as purely hypothetical!

    My understanding is that once BA has your money for seat selection, the only time you will get it back is if they cancel your flight and even then you have to put in a claim for it! You may get a sympathetic agent though.

    I upgraded from Club to First for a flight to Vancouver in Jan 2020, shortly before the world closed down. I had paid for seats in Club to secure a good spot on the upper deck of a 747, and those fees were refunded with out question. It’s possible that the policy has since changed, of course.

    As an aside, I secured an extraordinary deal on that flight. I bought the CW tickets in a sale, following which the price rose dramatically. In the next sale, First was discounted but not Club, and the difference between the two was little more than my seat reservation cost. IIRC, my F tickets cost just over £1,500.

    I think surprisingly, one of the allowed conditions for a refund of seating fees IS actually if you are then in a higher cabin…

    See below:

    Refunds
    When you can claim a refund
    You can claim a refund for seats you paid for within 30 days of the completion of the last flight in your itinerary where:

    we change your seat to an alternative seat and you are unsatisfied with the alternative seat;
    we cancel your flight;
    you become ineligible to sit in an exit row and you inform us at least 48 hours in advance of scheduled departure of your flight; or

    you have paid for a cabin upgrade and do not wish to pay the difference to select your seat in the alternative cabin.
