Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Using a credit card upgrade voucher on a initial cash ticket

  • 124 posts

    Hello all,

I’m looking at booking a seat in Premium and then I’ll use an upgrade voucher earned via the credit card to seat in Upper (G).

When making the cash booking, does it have to done via VS directly, or can it be purchased from a third party ticket selling agent?

I’ve seen one on Skyscanner that’s around £120 cheaper than going direct, and VS don’t offer price match if you’ve found the same flights cheaper elsewhere (highly annoying)

Thanks to anyone who can help

I don’t know but I highly doubt it. I’m not sure if you can apply the vouchers for upgrade after-the-fact at all, as opposed to at the time of booking. To get a definitive answer you’ll probably have to call VS.

Generally speaking, buying through cheap resellers is a route to massive pain in the event of disruption, and you lose Section 75 protection if paying by credit card.

Usually when using vouchers etc like this is that you need to book direct with the airline so you know you’re in the right fare buckets.

No guarantee that that cheaper OTA ticket meets the fare bucket requirements – that’s even if the airline can see the fare bucket as cheapo OTA deals can mask it.

And even if VS did match the bookings would have to match exactly and that includes the fare bucket.

Re fare buckets mentioned above, all premium economy fare buckets should be eligible for upgrade. Same with Economy Classic and Economy Delight fares. My concern would be around the ticket being “owned” by the travel agent until T-24, potentially preventing VS from making any changes to it at all.

If you do end up giving it a try I think there are many of us who would love to hear 🙂
