Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Visa or Mastercard credit card suggestions for an unpaid carer

    Hello all,

Just seeking some advice specific to my circumstances. I know there are a lot of experts here!

I am looking to get a new credit card, preferably non Amex.

Since losing my job in 2022 I have, temporarily I hope, become an unpaid carer, looking after my elderly parents and have moved back to reside with them.

My income per year is 6000GBP. My outgoings are only the yearly vehicle tax, petrol, car insurance and the monthly broadband bill.

I would like to collect some kind of points, I pay most of the household bills myself with my existing Halifax Mastercard and my parents reimburse me.

Aiming to get points on the Council Tax and Water bills. Roughly 2650GBP this year. Small fry, I know!

If there are any credit card providers that a homemaker or carer designation versus “unemployed”, kindly advise!

    Thank you.

Depending on your credit limit on your Halifax card, you might find getting more credit to be difficult.

You also want to ask yourself what you want to achieve and use that as your starting point when looking for a card.
Are avios what you really want right now, or would a ca$hback card be better? If so then look then look for what ca$hback cards are available.
Or maybe a 0% on purchases for a long time, putting the money from your parents in a 3% savings account untouched ready to pay it off and collect the interest at the end (always paying minimum statement amount per month of course).

Checking your “credit rating” will prove nothing.
