Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club VS takes 37k points from my account 4 days before departure?

I’m still relatively new to VS so someone might be able to explain what’s going on here!

In December I booked seats to MCO and then called Virgin to upgrade to UC with the cc voucher. UC was 29k points pp on our travel date, which was obviously a bargain. The voucher value of 75k points therefore MORE THAN COVERED THE COST OF UPGRADING THE 2 SEATS. A list of points transactions for that appeared in the VFC account, which I assumed were something akin to what BA does when there’s a redemption or refund on a HHA.

So far, so straightforward, but then on Friday 2 things happened. One was that our aircraft changed from the old-style “coffin” configuration, to the A330-900 with the new seats. On the same day, another 37k points were deducted from my OH’s VFC account.

I’ve just called VS to query this removal of points, after 4 months. The agent insisted that it’s nothing to do with the change of aircraft (which would make sense, but it’s a heck of a coincidence and I did ask whether such a change might lead to “repricing”). He went off to speak to a supervisor and came back some time later saying the re-calculation was correct and was an adjustment from when the upgrade was processed back in December.

I pointed out (again) that the cc voucher more than covered the points cost of the upgrade, so there shouldn’t be any deduction from the account. The agent said he couldn’t explain it and would have to email the back office to ask what was going on.

Has anyone else had a “recalculation” of points so long after booking award seats on VS? It seems very odd to me, and makes BA look positively organised!

Booked in December using cash? Into which class? I’m wondering is this the same flight where that unexpected good fortune happened when using the voucher. And it turns out an audit picked it up and ‘fixed’ it. Might be best keeping a low profile on it till an explanation comes through; such is the tendency for good fortune to disappear when too widely known.
