Forums Payment cards American Express What happens on large refunds after earning an Amex SUB?

I am looking at potentially putting a large deposit for a group hotel booking happening next year onto a new Amex Plat which would take me some way towards the SUB. However, the deposit is refundable – I just wanted to find out what happens when refunds are processed after having obtained the SUB?

I would likely still be over the net 6 grand spend in 6 months but just interested to know what would happen if my net spend went below £6,000 during those 6 months? Particularly if I was considering downgrading or cancelling the card soon after hitting the SUB.

If your net spend is below the 6k in 6 mths after the refund then the SUB will be clawed back.

If you’ve withdrawn the MR already or cancelled the card you end up with a negative MR balance. No implications other than potential bad rep with Amex. Don’t be surprised if you end up on a back office blacklist for future applications.

Not quite the same thing as we’d already earned the bonus but we put a large spend (£8k) on the “wrong” BAPP card, then had it refunded a few days later. It triggered the 2 4 1 voucher and that was available for use even after the refund. Unsurprisingly, despite the AMEX app saying we had to spend another £8k to trigger the 241 voucher, when we did so many months later we didn’t get a second one!

Anything that leaves your Amex account can’t be clawed back, whether that is a voucher or MR transferred elsewhere.
