Forums Hotel loyalty schemes Hilton Honors What is the best Hilton for a short break in central NYC?

Just wondered how people have found the Hiltons in NYC. I’m taking my young son so will be central. Thanks

I tend to use Google Maps. Others I guess use Apple Maps. Or you could go traditional and use a paper map / ask a local.

If you’re not looking for high-end, I would get the best offer on any Hampton or Embassy Suites: they’re much of a muchness, but are central, no surprise resort charges and include at least a basic breakfast for the young one to start the day (this is what I’ve done with my son). We’ve always found streets in the 30s to be a good location for this sort of trip.

We stayed at the Hampton Grand Central last summer. Reasonably priced/well located, one block from Chrysler and Grand Central station.
If you’re looking for an observation deck view I’d recommend summit one vanderbilt. Short walk from this hotel.

And remember (if you’re Diamond/Gold) the free breakfast at Hilton properties in US is replaced with that F&B credit (which doesn’t even cover the cost of it) so at least you don’t have worry with Hamptons as it’s included for all anyway.

That’s not strictly true. Some properties such as the HGI in Austin manage to make their gold member’s continental breakfast cost equal the F&B credit and charge a small premiumm for the cooked option.

New York Hilton Midtown is great if you are Diamond as it has an executive lounge. Location is great too and walking distance from Central Park.

If you’re gold or diamond you get lounge access at the Hilton UN Millenium (or at least that was the case back in 2019), which is on a very high floor with great views of the Chrysler building and East river.

Stayed there in November and there was no mention of any lounge – must have been discontinued? The rooms were also beginning to show their age and were quite dirty (among other things some unidentifiable drops of dark liquid on the toilet seat when we checked in..!)

Are you sure it was the same one? It was a lovely property when we stayed. I think there are 2 Milleniums, though I thought I read the other one (Times Square?) was leaving Hilton.

    JDB has another account now?

Unfortunately yes! Stayed there once in 2019 as well and was looking forward to come back last year, but it’s really taken a turn for the worse. That said, I would still prefer it over Hilton Midtown and Hilton Fashion District, and the views are great as most rooms are relatively high up.

Oh dear, I’ll cross it off the list for a future visit then! We were upgraded to a beautiful corner room which was very spacious for NYC and I feasted on smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels every morning for breakfast (sorry, @JDB!), while admiring the views.

    Ok John 👍

If looking at a Hilton, start off with the Embassy Suites Manhattan for the included breakfast and the Complimentary Evening Reception. Then consider the Homewood Suites for the included breakfast.

After this, if you want an executive lounge and location, and assuming you are a Diamond, look at Hilton Midtown.

If staying for three nights, consider a Hilton Grand Vacation package, but do not accept any offer they give you to take one up. You can stay at the residences in Midtown, or 57th St. You may be able to use the HGVC lounge if you specify prior to booking the offer over the phone that this must be necessary to understand the offer they will give you. You may have an offer on your Hilton account for this which could be as little as €129 for three nights.

Do they not come after you to attend the dreaded “presentation” if you do this?!

Surely for anyone with a backbone these are a breeze? I’ve often thought about going on one and just telling them I’m not interested. I can block out the rest of any conversation…

It’s just a PITA and eats into your holiday time, especially on a short break. As timeshare owners we’re always getting approached with “special offers”, but for the past few years have got out of any discussions by pointing out that the £/$ exchange rate is so bad that we can’t afford anything!

For around £100 for three nights, two hours of my time to sit, listen and say no is simple enough for me. Partly because when I say no and why, that continuing the conversation is a waste of their time. Last time was at Hilton Midtown when it was $199 for a 4 night stay, but included 10,000 Hilton Honors points and $200 in restaurant vouchers which were well used. Also, had access to the HGVC lounge at Midtown and was upgraded to a junior suite so was more than worth it.

At the end of the presentation, when I said that the drop in the FX rate due to issues post Brexit means that I will not agree to any offer you can make, I left and popped up to the Guggenheim and Natural History Museum for the afternoon. Done the same at the Paradisus Palma Real when they gave us a bunch of extras for going to visit the then Circle, and now Paradisus Grand Cana, and that was for an hour between lunch and dinner.

I stayed in the Motto in Chelsea a few years ago. Brand new hotel at the time. It was a smallish room but the view was looking downtown with the skyline and it was fantastic. I’m a sucker for good views from hotel rooms though and this might be the best I’ve ever had.

However prices have gone absolutely insane and I’m not sure it’s that good value because of the room sizes. But that view… wow

    NorthernLass 10,511 posts

@dundj, TBH, I would probably do this if it was just me, but OH can’t be doing with it, and they always insist that both people in a couple need to attend.

I’ve also just recalled that last time we were approached for a HGV presentation (in the US), they said we had to have an American address as well, so that was a useful get-out on that occasion!

Prices are crazy these days, though. My friend who’s never been to NYC wants to go for her 50th next year and I need to explain to her that dates are crucial in determining whether you pay $200 per night or $500!

Some of these rates appear as offers in my Hilton account but appear to be restricted to US residents (asking for Zip code and state).

@NorthernLass the NYC hotels, when available, can be exceptional value for that reason. Otherwise the other options like Orlando and Las Vegas are only worthwhile if you were planning to go there for three nights as part of a longer trip.

    @ToffeeTom
the latest one on my account does not preclude anyone from taking the offer. Though I usually get an upgraded offer which I now decline if I ever call Hilton about any of my upcoming stays.

@dundj Does it ask for a zip code and US state of residence when registering?

Anna, I’m looking at late Oct. and ALL the usual suspect Hampton Inns/HGIs etc. start around $450, even on my Hilton Family & Friends page…guess there’s time for fluctuation, but still a bit Yikes!
