Forums Payment cards American Express What’s the best way of switching from BAPP to Plat?

As the title says, I’d like to switch from BAPP to Plat. What’s the best way of going about this?
Do I request the switch on chat? Or do I cancel BAPP first and then apply via Rob’s link?

You can’t “switch” as such because they are different reward cards and require separate applications. You can have both (and you’ll get a sign up bonus on Plat if your only other Amex has been the BAPP for at least 2 years), or one or the other. There’s nothing to stop you applying via Rob’s link before or after you cancel the BAPP (though you may want to investigate whether there’s a retention offer as well) There’s a very slightly risk of being turned down if you already have an Amex with a very high credit limit but it’s rare if you have a good payment history.

Exactly. You need to look at your BAPP limit and decide if its so high that it may impact your ability to get Platinum, or at least with a decent limit.

Of course, you may get refused for Plat so cancelling BAPP first is risky.

I’d go for it with BAPP remaining open initially whilst potentially cutting my credit limit first (doable online) if its silly.

Thanks both. Have been approved for Plat today. I was thinking of downgrading BAPP to the free BA Amex rather than cancelling in the hope of benefiting from some statement credit offers multiple times. Is there any downside to doing this? Does cancelling the BAPP reset the clock to qualify the sign-up bonus in 24 months (if my only other Amex is the Plat during this period)?

    Yes
