How can I find out the reason for a flight delay. My son was on Ryanair flight from Funchal to Stansted FR388. It was scheduled to land at 10.10am, landed 2.14pm today. Trying to see if he is due compensation..
The aircraft was on Porto Santo and had to come across first- https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/ei-gsj – I believe there were some weather issues in Maderia last couple of days. Ryanair will blame the weather. Others will weigh in on if they can blame that on previous sectors (I believe there were some unhelpful judgments on that point recently)
Yesterday night the plane your son was supposed to take this morning was diverted to PXO. This seems to have caused all sort of issues today.

I do not know why the diversion but you could argue it is not your problem and a new plane had to be sent instead. (I see a diversion on the 24th too!)
It’s bad weather in Madeira/FNC. Exceptional circumstances, no compensation, only duty of care is due.

You cannot realistically have that rather pointless argument with Ryanair – they will either pay or refuse at which point you can go to AviationADR which is the better route rather than MCOL given that Ryanair potentially has an absolute defence.
Ryanair have indeed claimed it was weather. High winds at Funchal airport apparently. Can my son challenge this? He thinks other planes were taking off and landing at that time…..

Other planes don’t matter. Weather issues typically restrict flow rather than an absolute stop.
Funchal (Madeira) airport has some very tricky and variable winds and flights often have to divert. So much so it actually has maximumw ind limits above which planes cannot land or take off which at other airports wouldn’t be an issue.
