Forums Payment cards American Express “Your Account is temporarily unable to access the Referral Programme”

  • 322 posts

I’ve been following this thread for a while as I needed to a referral link for a friend but link had disappeared.

Randomly towards the end of December I was checking the app and the refer a friend appeared again as a box in my transaction list, however when I went back the next day it had vanished.

More fool me for not taking advantage when it was showing.

Even when it shows up in the transaction list or as a banner when logging in, it still goes through to the “you’re not eligible” page, which is kind of annoying (and I’d imagine not-allowed, really, targeted advertising them telling you you’re not eligible).

It looks like whatever has happened to UK referral links happened in the US early last year: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/american-express-removes-some-users-ability-to-refer-friends/

I can’t find anything suggesting there was ever a resolution.

Interestingly, having been locked out of the referrals programme for a while like a number of other commentators on here (Plat & Nectar), I am able to refer on my new BA (free) card which I’ve just activated.

Out of interest, did you get referred by someone for your new BA card, or did you apply “clean”?

    It was a referral.

I had this problem on the free BA card.
Upgraded to BAPP card (so same account details, spend to 2-41 voucher retianed, etc.) & I can now refer again!

Referral program back today – at least for me.

not for me. It actually appears as an offer but if I click on it I get the temporarily unavailable message. I have no desire to refer anyone though so no skin off my nose.

Appeared briefly earlier today on my free BA card. Now gone again.

Likewise to the first part, though I would like to do this so a little frustrating

Same here. Appears in the offers page as a targeted offer but goes to the “unavailable” page. Every other offer that is directly marketed to me in my account works, except this. Is that allowed? Kinda like AMEX are taunting me…

As a couple of others have posted, I’ve been able to successfully refer using my referral link.

Amex kindly emailed me with said link to remind me to use it before an enhanced referral bonus expired. My person had instant acceptance, and my referral points posted the following day (even though the enhanced offer expired 2 months ago.)

Not much use if you didn’t take a copy of your link before the offer was removed from your account, but perhaps if you trawl old emails you’ll be able to find it, either received from Amex or where you forwarded it on to someone.

    Scott.

Just had a referral email from Amex for PRG 14k/30k which they also refer to as a £63 statement credit for me and £135 in “retail therapy treats” for the referee.

& mine has gone again. So upgrading did not fix it temporary, just a coincidence

Finally I have someone interested in taking out an Amex card and my ability to refer has also disappeared. Can’t see any option to do this from the app, so went to the website from a computer and I am getting the same error as everyone else.

I’ve not done any funny business, so this is most annoying!!

Has anyone submitted a data subject access request to Amex on the back of this? It feels like no one is sure of IT cock up or deliberate removal until underlying evidence of Anex’s thinking re one’s account is handed over.

People have reported that this first appeared in the US around a year ago which makes it less likely to be IT issue. There are exemptions within DPA 2018/GDPR that would allow Amex not to disclose this sort of information and there is also the risk that if you tweak their tail too much that won’t be good for the relationship.

Which exemption? It’s a referral programme, a sweetener benefit. Crime and taxation exemptions can’t apply here. It’s outside the scope of a regulatory requirement Amex are complying with. I fail to see how Amex would craft an exemption that would hold water if a complaint was raised with the ICO.

@BlairWaldorfSalad there are a couple of things here – it’s a bit similar to credit decisions, in that while it may show on your file that you are not eligible for referrals, the reasons for ineligibility or refusal of credit are unlikely to be there. In essence, the firm can plug the data they do hold about you (and will disclose for a DSAR) into their internal systems which may draw also on outside data, but only the outcome will show on your file. Even if the processes/algorithm behind the decision were there, the firm can rely on general exemptions such as confidentiality and/or the fact that disclosure would prejudice or seriously impair the purpose to avoid disclosing the relevant information to you. If they were challenged on this by the ICO, the firm would rely upon the fact that disclosure of their processes was confidential/proprietary and that any disclosure would prejudice the purpose by allowing people to game the system. You will find that financial services firms are unsurprisingly very good at compartmentalising information while complying with the law to ensure this sort of stuff is kept out of DSAR responses.

Worked for me, and a few other have reported success. You’ve nothing to lose by trying.

Was just on the phone to Amex processing a credit refund for a closed account and I asked about the reason for not being able to make a referral from my other card accounts. He stated that whenever you shut down an account, you lose the ability to make a referral for the next 3 months, but that after that period, it should then return.

This is most certainly not true across the board. Was it a UK based rep you were talking to, or one of the overseas call centres? If the latter, I’d very much suggest they were talking rubbish

While the referral isn’t available, the referral link that was generated more than 1 year ago still works.
I managed to find it in the chat history with my freiend and used the link to apply a new card.
The referral bonus appeared after a few days.
