“Your Account is temporarily unable to access the Referral Programme”

Just a little tip – if you apply for a new Amex card, when you activate and add it to your online account, there will be a referral link initially. Save it straight away as it will probably disappear soon. The link should still work even after the referral option has gone.
Well this is my experience anyway!

Or create a different/brand new Amex online account and register any new cards there.

I’ve done this too but the referral option still disappears again after a while (in my experience).
Read this thread with interest because I’ve just discovered I don’t have the referral link in the app or website

This has been ongoing for a while and some have complained to the FOS unsuccessfully.

@JDB I thunk you might have linked to the wrong case? but regardless it was interesting reading and what a p take by *mr C…@sloth – yes, apologies, I think this should be the right one

Mr C and this Mr F are the least of the p*** takers really. Other ones from the last quarter of 2024 are so remarkable that the reasons for the collapse of customer service and the way Amex no longer trusts its customers becomes worryingly clear.
Haven’t read the pdf yet. I reckon I’ve done three or four referrals in total in 14 years. That’s the opening year of my account
I have just signed up for a new Amex card after a 2 year pause with AMEX. It initially showed me a referral link, however this is now gone stating I am temporarily blocked from the referral programme.
Why would they block me instantly as a new customer.

I was previously blocked from referring others too, 2 years ago.Like the majority of us you are blocked as they don’t want to pay out the referral points anymore. If you took down the referral link though it will still work
@WorldFlyer – you aren’t exactly a ‘new’ customer, so you could ask the question the other way round. If Amex chose to block you from referrals before, why would they allow them now and that’s before even taking into account the fact you have shunned them for two years, presumably seeking gain.
@sloth – is there any evidence for your assertion “like the majority of us you are blocked”? It seems highly improbable. Also, it isn’t that Amex doesn’t want to pay out referrals any more, but rather they don’t want to pay out points for bad referrals and/or to bad referees. If you took down the referral link though it will still work[/quote]
Is this still thw case?
Didn’t work for me@WorldFlyer – you aren’t exactly a ‘new’ customer, so you could ask the question the other way round. @JDB I have as much evidence for my assertion as you have that my assertion is wrong…I am also not criticising Amex as you are implying. It’s their card and their programme, they can do what they want 😉
For what it’s worth I was one of those blocked when this issue first arose. Can’t recall the exact sequence of card cancellations/reapplications afterwards, but at some point when I successfully applied for a new card I was able to refer again, so it’s definitely not (necessarily) a lifetime block.
My uncle was approved for the Gold card back in January, but was unable to generate a referral link when he wanted to refer someone (didn’t think to save a copy of the link immediately after being accepted).
A couple of times he (well, my cousin) reached out on chat asking why he wasn’t able to refer, and they said it could be a number of reasons, but they couldn’t specify why. My cousin reached out again earlier this week as he had a couple of potential referrals, and this time the chat agent said they would leave a note on his account that my uncle wanted to refer someone, and then lo and behold, the referral link appeared the next day.
Thank you all for the feedback, seems people have very different experiences. I may try calling to see if they allow it again for me.
I checked my link after the latest SUB offer and was going to refer my wife as she is well over the 24 month limit for SUB.
However both our accounts are unable to make referrals.
I see this has been going on a long time and I had an unproductive chat with Amex this morning.
I asssume this is still going on.
Well when my wife gets the platinum, assuming it gets approved, when I cancel my platinum that’s the reason I’ll be giving them even though we don’t need 2 platinum accounts…..OH is able to refer from green Amex but not BAPP. He has held green Amex continuously for years, never referred from it or closed and re-opened it. BAPP was used for referrals, closed etc. Amex definitely is keeping tabs….
Just checked my account this morning and an enhanced referral offer has appeared on my account, after my chat with Amex yesterday.
