New Amex hotel cashback deals: Thistle (£50 off £100), Hilton and others

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

A large number of new hotel cashback deals were launched by American Express yesterday. Whilst only the Thistle deal is outstanding, what is great about these deals is that you can combine them with any other offer or sale as long as your total bill hits the required target.

These offers have not yet appeared on the cardmemberoffers.co.uk website although it is fairly certain that they will.  However, there are direct registration links for most of the offers below.

To register immediately, log in to your American Express account, visit the statement page for EVERY card you have, and click on ‘Offers’ at the bottom.  Some or all of these promotions will show up and can be ‘saved’ to your card.

If you don’t see the one you want, wait a few days and it should be available for registration via cardmemberoffers.

This is what is available:

Hilton (comments suggest it also works at Doubletree and possibly other brands) – £50 back when you spend £250, UK only, expires 12 April – you can register for that deal here

Thistle / Guoman – £50 back when you spend £100, expires 12 April – register here

Landmark / Lancaster London / K West – £75 back when you spend £200, expires 12 April – register here

Red Carnation – £20 back when you spend £100, expires 12 April – register here

onefinestay apartment rental – £500 back when you spend £2,000, expires 13 February – register here

The Grove (Watford) – £25 back when you spend £250, expires 12 April

Other deals I saw were:

First Great Western – £10 back when you spend £60, expires 12 April – register here

ESPA at Corinthia London – £45 back when you spend £300, expires 12 April

Costco – £10 back when you spend £100, expires 16 February

There is also, apparently, a 15% discount on easyJet Plus discount as well.

Combine the Thistle deal with Signature

The Thistle / Guoman hotels deal is, in value terms, easily the best offer hereBy coincidence I wrote about Signature, the Thisle / Guoman loyalty programme last week.

The key benefit of joining Signature is a voucher for a free Sunday night and free Sunday lunch when you pay for a Saturday or Monday night at Best Flexible Rate.  If you could get that Saturday or Monday night with £50 cashback, you are looking at a pretty good deal – potentially two nights accommodation and Sunday lunch for £75 or so all in, depending on hotel.

The Thistle sale is also still running for another 2 days and the ‘£50 off £100’ promotion would work alongside that as pre-pay rooms are included according to the rules.

Combine the Hilton offer with the Winter Sale

It seems a long time since I wrote about this, back in late November, but the Hilton Winter Sale carries on until January 31st.  The special rates are valid for every weekend in 2015.  My article is here and the special booking page is here.

Remember that only UK hotel qualify for the £50 Amex cashback.  If you book for a stay after April 12th, when the Amex deal ends, you would still get the cashback as long as the hotel charges your credit card for your pre-paid stay before that date.

  • Lloyd says:

This is the comment I wrote yesterday on the driverless pods article a few days ago – should have waited 12 hours for this new article!

“I see the same Amex offer. I’m looking for book to stay in June but assume that if I get a prepaid rate then it is going to count? Anyone know whether Thistle do actually take payment at time of booking? Assume that if I add parking to the booking the money will be taken at the same time?”

    • sandgrounder says:

I booked before Christmas and the prepaid rate did debit straight away. I didnt automatically get the £50 back, but an email sorted that out. The Ts&Cs are a little different this time so hopefully that is sorted now. Don’t know about parking sorry, but I would be cautious as it is often managed by a third party.

      • Lloyd says:

I’m assuming the £60 charge for parking at Thistle is for their own car park, no mention that you have to go to a third party provider which I want to avoid!

      • Mike says:

sandgrounder, what email did you use? I still have some missing cash back but have a lloyds issued card.

    • Andy says:

I’m looking to book for July. The T&Cs say you have to book and stay by April but not sure they’ll be able to match all that up very easily? Anyone with experience of this?

    • Discount Mike says:

I’m planning on booking a £99 room but topping it up with £5 box of chocolates. Surely I’ll be charged in one transaction for that?

      • Rob says:

As long as you charge it to your room, yes. Or take some water from the minibar (if they have them) or a beer!

  • Daniel says:

Do you know if the £100 can be across two separate transactions? I need 2 x nights at the Thistle Heathrow and the rooms are £53 each.

Also, does anyone have an opinion (from experience) on which of the London properties is the nicest for a weekend break?

    • Rob says:

You never know. Most Amex offers do NOT allow combining transactions but they are rarely clear which. I would imagine this one does not.

  • mister.c. says:

I’ve just started the AMEX journey and not seen these before. Many thanks for the post.
The Hilton t&c’s (and the BW, but not the Thistle) includes the following ‘Offer limited to the first 10,000 UK Cards to save the offer.’

Which sounds much better than I thought – I was expecting the first x number of transactions, and as I am not staying until the end of Match, running the risk of not getting the credit. So offer saved and will look into whether Hilton offers decent value in London when I get back from work!

  • Kris says:

But of course Newcastle is blacked out for the Great North Run. ;(

  • Dave B says:

Any idea if these offers work without staying at the hotel – ie could I spend £200 in the Landmark restaurant/bar and still get £75 off?

    • Rob says:

Depends if the restaurant is independently run and, even if not, whether it is processed as Thistle or under the restaurant name.

      • DaveB says:

Sorry – it’s the Landmark group (specifically Landmark London) I’m interested in, not Thistle. Am I right to think that, provided they come up on my credit card as Landmark, then payments in the hotel bar/restaurant/spa would count? If so, then i might have to go for a quick drink to test it out…

  • Cheshire Pete says:

Used thie £50 Thistle offer twice in December across my two cards, and using my free Sunday night saved quite a lot of money on my stays!

Just passed the 1st anniversary on my Platinum card and after weighing up the £450 fee against the benefits I decided it was worth renewing, which happened this month.

I am curious though a credit appeared on my account for £50 titled “UK REGISTERED CARD NON SE” Does anyone know what this credit is for?

    • Sticky says:

That’s exactly the credit that appeared on my MBNA Amex. I was assuming that this was for the Thistle promotion?

    • Richard says:

Amex promotional credits often show up on my Barclaycard as UK REGISTERED CARD NON SE. So, yes, that’ll be it.

      • Cheshire Pete says:

Ah. Because a few days after my Thistle transaction in December I contacted them when the £50 didn’t credit. But they did it manually back then. Oops! Seems like I got £100 in total then. I feel embarrassed…..

  • Sticky says:

Amex ran the same promotion with Thistle from sometime in Nov until 31st Dec 2014. I stayed at Thistle on 22nd Nov, and the £50 came through 7 weeks later… too slow 🙁

  • David says:

The Costco offer is online only. Too bad as I’d planned a Costco shop later this week.
