It’s back: £1,200 Club World to Hawaii, £995 to JFK and other British Airways sale bargains

British Airways is launching a new sale todaythe home page is here.

I will take a look at some of the prices from London over the next few days.

However, in the short term, the most important thing to note is that the crazy prices for Club World flights to North America are back – as long as you start your trip outside the UK.

British Airways BA A380 flying

Hawaii is incredibly cheap even though British Airways does not fly there itself! You will need to change to American Airlines in Los Angeles – or, to maximise tier points, in New York and Los Angeles.

The best deals appear to be from Dublin and, of course, that is also a very convenient starting spot for UK residents.  It is worth checking Copenhagen, Brussels and Oslo – there are some amazing £1,700 Australia fares out of Oslo, for example, which I will look at in a day or so.

Example fares include:

  • Dublin to Hawaii – €1,690 (£1,198) return in Club World in February
  • New York for €1,402 (£994):
  • Los Angeles for €1,684 (£1,194):

The fare rules are straightforward:

Book by September 22nd 2015

Book 28 days before travel

A Saturday night stay is required

Complete travel by June 19th 2016

Tickets are non-refundable

NO STOPOVERS are allowed – this includes in London.  A gap between flights of more than 24 hours is treated as a stopover.

Tickets can be changed for €300 but you also have to pay any fare difference – which could be substantial after September 22nd when the prices go back up

Booking these flights is can be simple and it can be complex. For an easy life, you can simply book whatever comes up on ba.com. If you are planning to try to upgrade British Airways legs to First with Avios, you MUST book at ba.com.

However, it is also worth looking at aa.com as that may bring up different routings for the same price.  Note that, if your route includes a two-class US domestic flight (Economy and First), you want to ensure that you book that particular flight under an AA flight number, which may involve booking the entire trip on aa.com.

This is because, when a 2-class US domestic flight has an AA flight number, the premium cabin gets you First Class tier points with BAEC.  If you book the flight under a BA flight number – which ba.com usually does – it posts as a Business Class flight with business class tier points.

The exact ticket rules can be found via the ITA Matrix tool I outlined here if you pull up a fare. This allows more advanced users to construct very complex itineraries. Some tickets, if they have a generous mileage allowance, may allow you to start in, say, Brussels and go to Helsinki (on Finnair) then to London and then to the US, just to squeeze out a few more tier points. You would need to book such an itinerary by telephone with British Airways.

Remember that you do NOT receive 210 tier points for the London City to New York JFK flights any longer – they earn the standard 140 points each way, the same as Heathrow to New York.

For clarity, if you book a ticket starting in Dublin then you MUST start in Dublin. You cannot turn up at Heathrow and just board the long-haul leg.  Given recent stories about British Airways causing difficulties with people who drop the last leg, you should plan to take the final flight to Dublin.

The British Airways promotional page for the Summer Sale is here although it only focusses on flights starting in the UK.

  • Hingeless says:

Any one got any ideas how these can be done the other way around, I need to fly to Europe from Sydney and am happy to go any crazy route.

    • Andy says:

Try Frankfurt to Sydney in First Class…and you might want to book ASAP!

      • xcalx says:

Indeed, First class returns for £1349 + a minimum of 56000 Avios plenty of dates.

        • Hingeless says:

Thanks but I need to go the other way e.g. SYD-LHR-SYD i’m working away from the UK at the moment

          • xcalx says:

Sorry, I was replying to Andys comment re the low cost of the FRA-SYD flights

  • Nick says:

I agree some ‘good’ prices in places if you can get on an A380, but some of the fares ive been looking at are hardly spectacular. Why i would want to spend £1k nearly to fly from DUB on a crappy 757, only to return on a just as crappy and filthy 747 from NYC via LHR i dont know… as others have said i’ll wait for a QR sale thank you very much for a proper biz experience.

    • Think Square says:

Try US DUB-PHL. You’ll get a comfortable and modern A330. You also get all the US immigration stuff done before you board.

      • Alan says:

You *might* get one of them, or as happened both ways to Mr recently I got one of their old falling-apart planes!

  • mikeact says:

This should be an interesting day for comments, based on the recent topic of ‘to return or not to return to the start’.
So, who is going to go back to Dublin or wherever, and who is going to jump ship in London ?

  • Leo says:

Am I doing something wrong – can’t find anything under about 4K to HKG from either Copenhagen or BRU? Looking November. The sale isn’t only for North America is it?

    • Barney says:

Try to book from any German airport: You will be able to book First to HKG for about €1300 (return), if you are quick.

    • Rob says:

The Dublin deals are for North America. The sale out of London is to everywhere. Some of the other European starting points may cover HK.

Remember that Qatar will have probably HK for under £1,000, possibly under £800, from Brussels and Copenhagen in its next sale, based on recent history.

  • Tom C says:

Not sure if this has been this way for a while (I know there were J deals here), but £1500 return to HKG in F via FRA->LHR->HKG when I’m looking to go in May next year. What an absolute bargain, seeing that it’s nearly £4k if you go direct via LHR.

    • Polly says:

Tom, way cheaper if you get Avios RFS back from FRA to LHR, huge saving

  • xcalx says:

Anyone looking for KUL plenty of dates First class FRA-KUL £795 return, wont last long.

    • Polly says:

How is this possible? Our 241 in F only £200 less in taxes only, admittedly from LHR. But what an absolute bargain. Think we will only collect avios now in future for positioning flights in RFS! This is just too much to take in, this morning! Am choking on my brekkie here!

      • xcalx says:

It looks like another fatfinger deal

        • James says:

It’s really not a mistake fare… These have been around for a large part of this year.

        • Polly says:

I think fat finger guy or gal is one of our HFP folks!

          • PJH says:

Germany to KUL for £785 was there – I had it priced, and then BA killed to deal. Looks like a fare error – BA would probably have cancelled the ticket though if I’d been a little quicker and booked

          • Toby says:

Same happened to me too… now Matrix showing £3504 for the same flights!

  • Noggins says:

Well, I am very pleased with 2 seats to Honolulu ex Dublin via JFK and LAX for 3380 euros. Late Feb giving us 5 nights in Hawaii – and 50k miles and 1480 tier points between us. Took me a while to realise next year is a leap year! Only disappointment so far is that IHG redemption opportunities are poor in Hawaii. Any suggestions for best Dublin airport hotel for a very early next day flight…?

    • Marly says:

      holiday inn 15k points

      • Noggins says:

Thanks, Marly, but no, 35,000 points – for late Feb

        • Scott says:

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza when we did an ex-Dublin flight in April. I picked up a room for €80, so not worth using points if you can get a room at that price. Slight downside was having to catch a bus to and from the hotel, but they ran regularly and only took 5-10mins.

          • Daniel says:

There are two hotels in the airport grounds with shuttles from terminal – Maldron hotel and a Radisson Blu

    • Stu R says:

How are you managing to get flights via JFK & LAX? I keep looking and all I get is flights via LAX (direct from LHR), PHX, DFW or PHL?

      • Rob says:

Try aa.com – it tends to offer more flexibility. Alternatively, try the ba.com multi-city tool which may price it.

      • Noggins says:

Hi – I input the route, stop by stop in the multi city option and it came up with a huge selection of routings. Some priced much higher but the first option in the listing offered was the one I went for. It did take a few goes and I found some searches gave flight times that were impossible – eg second flight left before first had arrived!

    • John says:

Hilton Dublin airport is often heavily discounted due to being a few minutes by shuttle/taxi across the motorway.

Perfectly good (and not under flight path) place for a night but in odd looking location, opposite Tesco Clare Hall mall and hemmed in by derelict sites.

Often appears on discount sites, some offering avios etc, or book direct.

    • MoNkEyMaN says:

For a very early flight from DUB it is hard to beat the Maldron or Radission Blu, both of which are on site at the airport. Many other options are a short courtesy bus ride away.

    • AndyGWP says:

We stayed at Premier Inn @ DUB – it came in at around 38 euros, and had a free shuttle bus for the 10min(ish) journey.

It’s based on a bit of a retail park, with a TGI’s and a Hogs and Heffers there so you can grab a meal easily too.

    • Phil says:

Wow, without a stopover that is a hell of a long flight. How long exactly?

  • Marly says:

what a godsend! why on earth this never happens for south america 🙁
