Some good news on British Airways in-flight food

Back at the British Airways press event in early April – which now feels like a l-o-n-g time ago – Chairman and CEO Alex Cruz made some passing remarks about reversing some of the cuts on in-flight services.

It seems he meant it.

British Airways BA A380 flying

According to comment from cabin crew on Flyertalk, the following changes were meant to be in place yesterday:

The amuse bouche has returned to First Class

The flowers have returned to the toilets in First Class

Cheese and biscuits, and pretzels, have returned to World Traveller Plus

The contents of the ‘snack basket’ passed around in World Traveller on short routes – which is instead of a 2nd meal – have been improved with passengers allowed to take three items

The latter will undoubtedly please Troy Warfield, BA’s ‘head of customer experience’.  There is an internal BA staff video where he talks about how, when he worked a flight one day to see how it was, he saw cabin crew being forced – due to lack of stock – to reprimand small children who tried to take two items from the snack basket.

Given the huge amount of negative publicity that British Airways has received for its service cuts (it was a weird day when even The Economist started quoting HfP) you can’t help but think that some major mistakes have been made.  The bad publicity has almost certainly cost the airline far more in bookings than the paltry cost of a pack of World Traveller Plus pretzels or a fun-size chocolate bar.

British Airways BA A350 in flight

Meanwhile ….. at London City

You may have seen a story in some newspapers over the weekend about British Airways being forced to put back the launch of ‘buy on board’ catering at London City Airport due to a legal case.  A group had already purchased tickets for travel this Summer when the announcement was made and felt that their contract had been breached.  They claimed £156 in compensation.

British Airways revealed during the case that buy on board catering at London City has now been delayed until October and so the claimant had no claim after all.

Some reports put two and two together to get five and thought that BA had delayed buy on board at City because of this case.   That is not true.  It has apparently been delayed because of issues creating the necessary storage space on the small Embraer aircraft used.

Flew WTP from SIN last night. No sign of cheese or pretzels.

  • james says:

I am BA Gold and have decided to boycott further plans to fly First or Club World on long haul flights due to the shocking treatment of we who fly from Glasgow and connect via LHR – BA has a monopoly on the GLA/LHR route = it has taken our business for granted for way too long and the recent shock of being asked to pay for a drink or snack on the GLA/LHR leg of four flights that cost between
GBP 2000-4000 has well and truly f*cked me off!
I know I can fly to any other European city (including Dublin) and fly Club Europe and connect wih the same damn LHR flight onto wherever at a FRACTION of the cost of a UK departure ticket -t
Talk about f*cking your base customer over !
Mr Cruz and his tacky plans have seen the last of me and my own hard earned cash. I dont have companies paying my trips.
They can tart up the entrance to the Gold lounge at LHR for all they want and shout about it and columns and blogs can use smoke and mirrors and follow like sheep but it’s all a joke !
They know they F*cked up with the withdrawal of food on the flights from UK airports – and pity the poor staff who have now become effing stock keepers for M&S – bet they didn’t bank on that crap being pulled on them when they trained eh? I’ve had several flights recently where safety announcements and routines to pull back were compromised due to FAs being unfocused trying to sort out the bloody M&S sandwiches – and see customers buying bacon rolls only to be given them on the “10 minutes to landing” call !
It’s a disgrace. Easyjet staff could cope better than this fiasco!
I’m letting my BAEC card lapse after 30 years.
    Goodbye greedy BAst*rds !

BOB doesn’t bother me in the slightest 🙂

more sleep time without being disturbed

      • Andrew says:

How is it a disturbance, the crew hardly used to shake you awake to see if you wanted a G&T?

      • Alan says:

They’ll be submitting that comment as evidence against you in your MCOL case… 😉

        • Worzel says:

They’ll have to do some serious homework on it though- Harry, Squills, Bob, Lionel….?

          Sent in jest 🙂 .

          • Alan says:

Haha 😀 They might try to just buy him off with cases of wine too 😉

          • the real harry1 says:

heh heh but what I do object to of course is getting robbed of drinks & snacks I’ve paid for

          • Worzel says:

            For Squills @ 10:01- I’d be the same (!) – Worz .

    • Callum says:

      Jesus Christ! Calm down…

    • DP says:

I’m with James on this one.
I am also gold and I have fly from the regions (NCL), but now I try to avoid BA when I can.
I earn my status flying CX/MH/QR who are in a different league in all respects of the flying experience.

I burn my Avios for reward flight savers to position myself for ex Eu trips, but reluctantly still pay for four short haul sectors to satisfy the four flight requirement – which I am sure will increase in the short term.

If Cruz thinks that backtracking on some poxy pretzels, a finger sized Twix and a daffodil in the bog will appease those who like myself have found alternatives – then it’s too late I’m afraid.

      • czechoslovakia says:

        “Daffodil in the Bog”
Brilliant, but you`re assuming the flowers are going to be real, not plastic……

    • CV3V says:

      spoken like a Glaswegian 😉

I don’t mind flying out of GLA with BA, but i always use points, if i were paying cash i would use another airline for long haul in a premium cabin, BA doesn’t cut it and doesn’t deserve my hard earned cash.

I see some articles that I know won’t be relevant to me, so I’ve come up with a plan to combat the stress they cause – I don’t click on them, and enjoy the rest of this great site.

      See ya!

    • Luca says:

If you are going to criticise an airline for negative changes, then it’s only fair that you also write when positive changes are made. Therefore this is entirely relevant.

      • Rob says:

To be frank, if someome unsubscribes from the emails and goes back to reading articles on the site, I’m a winner 🙂 We get more ad revenue per page view than we get per opened email. Even if they use an ad blocker it bumps up the page views and makes it easier to persuade companies to work with us.

        • Catalan says:

Ah. So writing negative articles about BA (sometimes warranted) means more cash for HfP?
          You’re a smart man Rob

          • Rob says:

Not true. I don’t actually like writing negative BA stuff. Partly because I like to keep this a positive, aspirational place (in a time when, in general, you may feel the world is lacking positive and aspirational content) and partly because if people begin to feel that Avios is not worthwhile because BA is no longer an airline they wish to fly, that is hardly going to do our readership numbers a lot of good is it?

          • WillP says:

Calm down, if you don’t like BA or HfP go elsewhere.
            Too much negativity…….

    • Tony says:

      Adieu and don’t rush back.

  • Barbara says:

I flew Club Europe for the first time two days ago since the changes to the onboard service and meals, I was shocked to be told “Hot Chocolate” is now a club world item, I was offered a disgraceful plate of two finger sandwiches and on my return flight Something that tasted awfully disgusting and some dry cracker, fresh fruit with only 4 pieces.

I seriously, reconsidered my reasons for flying Club Europe, and BA in general. For £500 a ticket, I didn’t expect myself to have to purchase items from the M&S menu. A passager in front of myself kicked off a fuss, despite the fact he always had kosher meals, BA offered him non kosher meal.

Maybe it’s time, premium pax vote with their money. I am attempting my first non-BA Europe flight in two weeks, it might just be the end for me and BA. As I am not status oriented and buy premium tickets I believe for the price offered by BA there are better options available out there.

    Really disappointed. Rant over

  • Darren says:

Thank god the amuse bouche is back, that was really worrying me!

  • Justin says:

Was rather disappointed with the’snack basket’ on my WT flight to DXB on Sunday. One item offered only, I ended up with two rather broken biscuits! However was impressed with the quality of not the size of the main “Chicken Laka” meal – one of the the better BA meals that I’ve had. Looking forward to the Cheese and Biscuits on my WTP return tomorrow!

Are there any recommendations for which lounge to use at DXB on the way home with my PP?

    • Andrew says:

All the DXB PP lounges are over used and not particularly tranquil. That said, Emirates catering provide the food – so it’s pretty good.

      • Justin says:

Thanks, sounds like pays your money, takes your choice! At least there is a choice unlike at T5 at the moment.

I know that there is the lounge at the Sofitel, but could I go over to the Plaza Premium arrivals @T2?

        • Andrew says:

You can certainly visit Plaza Premium arrivals at LHR T2 after you land, collect your luggage, clear customs and take the HEX (free between terminals). The PP arrivals lounge is actually very good – nice individual shower rooms and breakfast. Keep hold of your boarding pass as sometimes they ask for this to gain entry.

          • KP says:

Arrived this morning on BA032 from HKG. Headed over to Plaza Premium at T2 arrivals to be told theyre completed closed today and tomorrow. Didnt bother asking why as I was pissed I had to make the journey from T5 to T2 and back for now reason…

    • CV3V says:

Depends what terminal your flight leaves from, the old DCA lounge in Terminal 1 was my preference over the Marhaba lounges as it had more food on offer (eastern and western buffet), it also has a quiet room with loungers in it (at the far end, next to the smokers room).

The lounges can be busy, just depends on the time of day/night, when i have been in them they have been very quiet and a welcome relief from the mall, i mean airport.

      • Justin says:

I’m on the BA104 so not sure where this departs from – first time in DXB. Just hoping to get a bite to eat and a chance to do some work before getting back on the plane!

        • CV3V says:

Its been a few years since i was in DXB, but the BA lounge was in T1, a short walk from the DCA Business Class lounge (where you can use PP), there is also a DCA First Class lounge, but dont think PP will get you in there. Always found the DCA to be a good lounge, although the showers were a bit weak.

  • Nate1309 says:

My wife and I flew CE to TFS last week, neither of us could have the choice of food we wanted. I had the other option on the menu, my wife ended up with something that wasn’t even on the menu. Which begs the question where was it from? And what is the point in having options. I was majorly P’d off.

  • Kelly says:

We flew to Moscow the weekend before last in First and the food was a pretty mixed bag. The crew told me that they have changed their food supplier in the past few weeks and this has caused no ends of problems (not sure if this is true or not!)- our flight was delayed leaving Heathrow as we were waiting for the food to be loaded on board!
In other news, the crew said there is a rumour going around that BA is going to be announcing a new route – London – Taipei – Auckland
