The Tesco Direct HP inks deal returns
Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission. See here for all partner links.
Tesco Direct‘s regular promotion on HP printer inks is back! If you’ve never seen this before, it is very simple. Buy 2 HP inks from the range shown in the link, and you get 500 bonus Tesco Clubcard points. 500 Clubcard points is worth 1,200 Avios.
The key is being able to resell the inks on eBay fairly easily, as they are commodity products. The cheapest cartridges at the time of writing are the HP364 Yellow at £6.44. Two would cost £12.88 for 512 Clubcard points, which is 1,228 Avios plus a handful from your credit card. You need to arrange to collect the items in a Tesco store to avoid paying postage.
You could probably sell the cartridge on eBay for around £2.50 net of all costs (eBay, Paypal fees, postage, jiffy bag etc). On that basis, your £12.88 cost comes down to £7.88. £7.88 for 1,228 Avios is not bad at all.
If you are going to go via the eBay route, have a look at what cartridges sell for before jumping in. It may be that cartridges which cost you more in the first place have a far higher resale value and thus a smaller overall loss. Black cartridges are likely to be a lot more popular than yellow, for example.
There is one extra reason why I will be jumping on this promo. Tesco is one of the partners in the Avios ‘get more’ promotion, where you can get 2,000 bonus Avios each quarter when you convert at least £6.25 of Clubcard vouchers to Tesco.
(This promotion is only open to BAEC or avios.com accounts who had NOT received a Tesco conversion between November 2010 and November 2011).
Since I would not otherwise have enough Tesco points to do this across my family’s accounts, I am effectively getting over 3,000 Avios for a £7.56 spend, assuming I go for the yellow 364’s. And that is an excellent deal.
